Sunday Afternoons Sport Hat

Looks cute on a woman. This hat is surprisingly not hot. I was initially concerned because one reviewer says it's hot. To my surprise it's quite breathable. It doesn't actively cool your head, but it keeps you feeling much cooler when you are under the sun than without any hat. I think the white fabric helps reflect a lot of the sun's direct heat. The flap has 2 layers - the inside layer is darker, same as the underside of the brim. I thought the flap may trap heat, but it actually keeps your neck cool because the stiffer double-layered fabric doesn't drape directly on your neck, thus leaving some space between your neck and the flap to allow plenty of air circulation. I have a pony tail and the flap keeps it away from sticking to my neck. Definitely cooler than without the flap. The flap isn't long so make sure you wear a top w/ high enough neck line. My head and neck sweat a ton so it's impossible to keep sunscreens on. With this hat I can skip wearing sunscreens on the back of my neck and ears.In the front forehead area that's a thick strip of fabric that's designed to wick sweat. I normally don't like sweat bands because they tend to trap heat and make me hot, but this hat's partial sweat band doesn't seem to contribute to overheating. On really hot days (over 90 F) I simply spray cool water on the sweat band so the wet strip will actively cool my forehead and keep me feel more comfortable when working out in the hot sun. The crown fabric is a bit stiff due to water repellent coating but it's not overly hot and it can double as a rain hat when the rain isn't heavy. The mesh sides provide plenty of ventilation so it's quite comfortable as long as there's some kind of breeze or if you are on the move.I bought the medium size and it's plenty big for me. The back adjustment as well as the neck cord keep the hat on me even in the wind. there's no velcro to mess up with your hair, and the pony tail hole is rare for hat of this style. I have long hair so I thread my hair into the hole as a loose pony tail. It keeps my neck cool. the brim is wide enough in the front but won't block my view. The problem I have with most sun hats are (1) too big; (2) too deep in the crown area or brim too low that they will block my vision; and (3) too hot because I am a big head-sweater. This hat doesn't have any of these problems. It's a great design with lots of attention to details that make it super practical and still decent looking.Note that this is a sport hat and not a high fashion statement. I wear it for hiking/running or doing outdoor sports when I need to keep my head cool and vision clear. It goes well with my athletic clothing. More over I can keep it on while driving because there's no back brim to hit my car's headrest, and it's also compatible with high back pack. I bought another SA hat (The Lotus hat) for non-sporty casual occasions as it goes better with my casual dresses. SA makes great sun hats for different occasions.

The rating associated with this review is solely based on the packaging of the hat. The best part of this hat is the wide 4” crescent brim. Upon opening the box, I was surprised and extremely disappointed to see that the hat had been folded in half thus damaging/ruining the brim. The manufacturer explicitly warns against folding the hat for this reason. Needless to say, I returned it. I will not reorder as it may well happen again.

I had bought another sun hat, but it flopped on the sides restricting my vision to mostly what was directly in front of me. It was also a little cumbersome. I saw a lady with a Sun Day hat and asked her about the brand, As it turned out, the gift store had one in one color I didn't want, so I went on Amazon and found a much better price and lots of choices. I got it in my choice of color, and it is my GO TO hat. I can see all around, and the sun is blocked on my face and on the back of my neck--just what I need. It is light enough to hang on my belt when I go inside, and I can leave it on while driving. It goes on a bit loose, and I tighten the cap part with a tab on the back that hold even in a brisk breeze. I could not be more pleased with this hat. It is one of my best purchases!

First off, I hate, HATE wearing hats!But, I needed something to wear on a 9-day sailing trip in the sun. This was PERFECT! I didn't get burned, it was completely adjustable, fit perfectly, and it was NOT hot!! The under-chin strap was necessary in the wind and I am now a hat convert (well, sort of).Others in my group tried it and were surprised at how cool it was in comparison with their hats and I think I might have sold a few along my travels. Being on a sailboat, in full wind and sun, the flap in the back provided fantastic protection for my neck (and ears). Great product!!

I wear it to play pickleball in the desert. Brim is nice and wide, but not so wide as to block your eye on the ball. You can adjust the tightness with a sturdy belt type tightener that can be adjusted with the hat on and without catching your hair. If the wind kicks up, there is a tightening cord under the chin (I usually shove it to the back, but do use it occasionally. It also has nice side vents to let some air in. Back flaps are wide enough to provide decent protection, but not so much that you see them. There is no sweat band in the brim, but there is a peculiar, flimsy absorby thing inside the front band. It seems mostly for show. Haha. Since there is no sweat band, you may (as I do) have sweat in the eyes issues if you don't install a sweat band (as I did). I did it with velcro so I could wash it. Get a bigger size if your head is larger if you are going to add the band. The blue is bright and cheery but not neon. Beige is... well it's beige. My husband loves it. Oh, if you wear a ponytail there is a small hole in the back near the tightener.

My kid has owned the Sunday Afternoon play hat for 4 years. I just bought her a new one in the next size up. I decided I too needed a good sun hat. I feel ridiculous in this hat. I've never been comfortable wearing hats. Those are my weirdo issues. Lol. However, I wore my hat all day at a festival and the sun was miserably hot. The hat was very lightweight and it definitely did its job with protecting me from the sun. I would definitely buy this hat again. By the way...I love the hole for pony tails! I wish the kids play hat had the same.

This is the 3rd had I've bought by this company. These hats have quality construction, air vents, very large brims that don't flop, and even work on larger than average heads. They are adjustable in the back. They are constructed perfectly for keeping the sun off your face, head, and most of your neck so I don't have to wear so much sun block. They are definitely not a high fashion item, but if protecting your skin is your main objective these hats are a must. This "sport" version of the hat has slightly less sun protection than their "Adventurer" and "Sundancer" designs, but it's perfect for me. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any hat made by Sunday Afternoons.

The hat did fulfill its purpose for a California desert trip and protected my head (and partially neck), from the sun. Yet, it's construction is not very comfortable, the flap doesn't adequately cover the neck and overall it's unflattering for a woman. I don't see myself using it more this summer or in the future.

Many features make this an incredibly practical and versatile hat:1. The adjustment on the chin strap can be tightened with a single hand - good since I can't always free up both hands quickly in a sudden gust of wind.2. The ponytail hole can be used as a secure handle when not being worn (e.g., inside a store) and when holding a bunch of other stuff.3. There's not so much material in the back (nor is the back stiff) such that this fits perfectly under hoods when it gets colder. It's still useful since the visor keeps more rain and sun off your face than the hood alone.

This hat is exactly what I expected. Works great for sun protection... I wear it while playing Pickleball in the Mexican heat. Love the strap around it... great for riding a bike and not having it fly off. Haven’t washed it yet but it looks very durable... Well worth the price!

The brim is a bit bigger than I thought it would be and the back flap doesn't tuck up into the hat and stay as well as advertised but overall this is a great hat and there isn't anything even close to it on the market

Really good quality but I found the brim too wide for my small face. Returned it.

The front of the hat carton arrive in package a tilt in the middle of the hat ,not strong enough like a cap

There is no way I can play sports with this hat unless I tie it several times around my neck which would be uncomfortable.

Very happy with this hat but I wish the neck protector tucked up better or was removable but all in all it does the job and can stay on when windy.
