Great Selections From a Great Writer
The choice and arrangement of these essays is well done. E.B. White understands the soul of Manhattan - my home town - and New England - where I grew up. His inner compass is true. This is now my favorite book about the the turbulence and triumphs of Twentieth Century America. Simple. Readable. Friendly. Profound.

A delightful read that keeps on giving
Brilliant writing and observations with a cleaver sense of humor. A book you keep close by to pick up when you need to connect to a better place.

A Master of Literary Style
As a writer for the New Yorker magazine and other literary forums, E. B. White's reputation as a prose stylist is well established, but it is a style better suited to short anecdotes, essays, and features. This collection of his better writings from that magazine shows off his style, his warm humanity, and his often surprising insights and phrasing to advantage. These pieces are also intended for a sophisticated adult audience, which makes them infinitely easier to digest than his celebrated children's stories that I find cloying in the extreme. Anyone interested in learning how to write effective short pieces would do well to study this book. Note, however, that since these pieces were written, the literary style of magazines has devolved as they struggle to keep pace with the rapidly waning ability of the general public to read or comprehend anything more challenging than M.C. Beaton. If White were alive today, he would struggle to place many of these pieces with any magazine, because they are too well written -- which is a tribute to White, and a sad commentary on the audience he once served.

Book & vendor met expectations
Book in very (remarkably) good condition, as promised, and speedily received. Recommend both - the book to fans of Andy White, and the seller to anyone.

timeless writing
The essays in this book should be required reading and study in all English writing courses. And this should be at all levels starting in high school.....And they are fun to read.

wonderful book for New Yorker fans.
the stories are wonderful, the New Yorker was in its heyday when these were written. You can sit down and read one story, or you can read the whole book. I loved the stories and am glad to add this to my collection. There's something in here for everyone to enjoy, whether you read the New Yorker magazine or not.
