Hichki Hindi

A Must Watch.
Siddharth P Malhotra’s “ Hichki” is a treat to watch !! It is a movie about overcoming the obstacles in one’s life !! Rani Mukherjee who plays “Naina Mathur” is the protagonist of the movie who is suffering from Tourette Syndrome which is a nervous disorder in which one makes a repetitive and unwanted sound and this is what acts as a deterrent for Rani’s character to get her dream job of being a teacher !! After five years of search and numerous rejections when she finally gets the job of a teacher in an elite school , where she herself was once a student , she has to teach a bunch of 14 underprivileged children who ends up getting a chance to study in such a school through the right to education act !! However the challenge Rani faces is to make these 14 defiant and impish children , realise their potential and do well in their studies. She eventually succeeds in doing so.The supporting cast of real life couple Sachin and Supriya Pilgaonkar as Naina’s parents , Shivkumar Subramaniam as the Principal , Neeraj Kabi as the antagonist teacher , and others do a very good job . Even Vikram Gokhale as the former principal of the school who transforms little Naina’s life in making her believe in herself... is very nice. The story may have looked a bit cliche and may have lacked logic where Naina teaches all subjects in a higher class in such a reputed school... but with a very nice climax it makes up for all that!! The bunch of 14 kids delivers a fantastic performance as a team... however the credit should go to the casting director Shanoo Sharma to zero in on such talented kids as all of them collectively complement each other’s performances and when they appear together with Rani then it adds to the quality of the scene which makes it a treat to watch !! She even gets hold of actor Hussain Dalal as Rani’s brother who if one remembers , had played the role of the Stand up comedian who used to stammer in the 2014 Nescafé ad !! The connection can’t just be a coincidence and it has to be a well thought decision of casting Hussain as Rani’s brother !!However the person who steals the show is none other than Rani Mukherjee as “Naina” who makes a comeback after 4 long years and with her performance creates magic on the screen and doesn’t let one believe that they are watching a movie as the acting is just flawless...whether it’s her expressions , emotions , actions or her way of talking with the speech impediment where she keeps on saying... Ch... Ch... Ch... Ch...is just marvellous !! Rani is such a gifted actor where she delivers one of her best performances after “Black”!! It also gives us a message to keep fighting with the challenges that life throws on us and overcome the obstacles that one faces!! There are no bad students... there are only bad teachers... so let life be a good teacher and let all of us be good students...as life teaches us a lot through the “Hichki” that we face and makes us an even stronger person!! My recommendation... “Hichki” is a class apart... so it’s a Must Watch.

A Mirror of My Life as a Teacher of Science and Mathematics
The movie was full of the truths facing disadvantaged children and the teachers who love theim enough to help them learn which is an act BEYOND simply teaching them information. This was my life for 32 on the East of Detroit, Michigan. My classes of scholars ranged from those separated from their primary grouping to those considered the cream of the crop. We all had one thing in common. We all came from similar humble beginnings. I wanted always to be my students' Ms. Allen. She was a beautiful stately older African American woman who taught Algebra at George Washington Junior High School in Mt. Vernon, New York. She knew before I did that I could obtain a 'PERFECT' score on the NY State Algebra Regents Exam. Ma'am's students in the film were all my students. The thousands I loved during my challenging, rewarding and HONORABLE tenure. My work as a teacher is the legacy I have to leave not only my former students but my Children who always knew that Mama 'was seeing some other kids on the side". A magnificent film. Every teacher should watch on one of their 'not so good' days. I'm sure this movie will help them 'Keep Their Eyes On the Prize'

Rani Mukerji at her best!
When Rani Mukerji performs, it is always worth watching. However, this has to be her most heart warming role to date.Rani Mukerji joins the ranks of Edward James Olmos (Stand and Deliver) and Sidney Poitier (To Sir, with Love). While it is the typical tale of the hardened students and the tough teacher who makes a difference in their lives, this has a twist. It is hard not to cheer for Rani Mukerji's character as she ups the wit and charm. It's a great film to cheer a little and tear up a little more.I admit I'm a Rani Mukerji fan, but even my anti-Bollywood friends love this movie.

Exceptional Acting
Naina (Rani Mukerji) has Tourette Syndrome, and the dream to become a teacher. After repeatedly being turned down for teaching positions over the course of 5 years--all due to her Tourette Syndrome--she is hired to fill an urgently needed post. Her class is made up of resistant, uncooperative underprivileged students, determined to drive her out. Naina must find a way to teach them not only academics, but self-respect as well. The feel-good plot is somewhat predictable, but that doesn't lessen the power of the film. The issue of Tourette Syndrome is treated with respect. The acting is superb, with Mukerji giving an incredible performance. The students were also amazingly good. Unlike typical Bollywood movies, there is little music, and no choreography, but the film doesn't suffer as a result. The acting makes this an exceptional film, and with it's positive message, it's a winner.

Remarkable film
This movie is special, right up there with Stand By Me and other type films in this teacher who inspires under achieving or disadvantaged children. But the one exception is the profound and incredible performance by the actress portraying the Tourette-syndrome afflicted teacher. It isn't overdone and the sub text of rejection by her father and the conflict with that in her life makes the film dramatically better. I thought the ending was interesting and it works, the teacher who stood against her teaching the failing students seemed a stretch, but it's always nice when the villain becomes in the end a good and honorable guy. Highly recommended.

Worth Watching
Very sensitive theme, beautiful portrayals by Rani and Neeraj. Shows very clearly how a great teacher can change lives and inspire children. Also the Tourette syndrome is so well portrayed without being defensive.
