Sarah does an incredibly eloquent job in detailing - literally from A-Z - what happens when you get your first pen and nib all the way to when you’re already advancing and wanting to add elegance to your finished product. I also LOVE how her personality comes through in this workbook (and if you follow Sarah on Instagram, you’ll understand what I mean). She talks about how calligraphy as an art and discipline is really a way to find your own voice and make it known, which to me, is now helping me think of what I really want to convey as a calligrapher, how I want to express my words, and how my personal style can manifest my voice through my work. I originally bought this for my nieces and my own kids because they are constantly asking me to teach them calligraphy..... but I quickly found it to be a great resource for me, as I move into working as a full time calligrapher. This book goes into everything with lots of details and pictures, including what materials to use and where to buy it (from paper to ink to pens!). The author provides lots of picture examples and divides the book into easy-to-follow sections of practicing, lowercase letters, uppercase letters, how to stylize your writing, numbers, different fonts, and even projects you can do. There’s a really clear format on how to write certain shapes and the sizing of letters using lines from rulers, and they give you the language necessary to talk about those shapes and letter forms using pictures. I found this book extremely thorough and helpful, and it definitely motivated me to get into calligraphy and give this gift to others who’ve always wanted to learn! I thought it would be so much harder and more complicated than it actually was, but after you have all the right materials it’s actually pretty easy to understand when the process is broken down in this way! Calligraphy is something I've always admired but never had the patience to actually learn. I'm hoping this book will help me change that (and if not, it's going to make a great gift for my calligrapher mom!!). I very much appreciated all the photos and examples in this book. It made it so much easier to figure out if I was holding the pen the correct way or if I was doing my letter properly. I appreciated the suggestions of materials, the tips for beginners, and care that went into each paragraph about strokes. Truly, this is a step by step guide. My one criticism is that the practice pages in the back are very glossy, which seems bad for actually writing on with ink. I ended up just photo-copying those pages.
