Food was their vocation. Heublein was in charge of development for product lines such as A1 Steak Sauce, Ortega Mexican Foods, Smirnoff Vodka, and Jose Cuervo, to name a few. When R.J Reynolds (RJR) acquired Heublein in 1984, the three were faced with the prospect of moving to RJR’s facility in California. Rather than making the move, they decided to form their own company that would satisfy a growing need in the northeast for tortillas/tortilla chips. Their work with Ortega had exposed them to the growing demand, as Mexican Food was making its move into the region. Using their experience in the food industry, as well as "severance" pay they received from Heublein, they acquired the necessary facility/equipment to found Severance Foods Inc., with Pan De Oro has the in-house brand. These guys are the real deal. The saltiness, crunchiness, and corny-ness levels are all excellent and in perfect ratio to one another. I load up anything I can think of onto these chips -- salsa, hummus, chili, even some leftover ezme or tuna salad (don't knock it till you try it) -- and they are hefty enough to withstand the weight without just crumbing to pieces, yet light enough that they don't stab your mouth like some other lesser brands. At the same time, while I used to think of chips solely as a vehicle for dips, these ones are tasty enough that I also eat them straight out of the bag. Perfect if I'm hungry right before a run!I had to hide them from my roommate to keep her from singlehandedly going through a case a week. I also had a friend who swore that eating these chips was directly related to his NFL team's wins last season.
