Spoiler-Free Review
Jonathan Hickman's Manhattan Projects, Vol. 5: Cold War features the line, "a polarized earth is the necessary means to our duplicitous end." The Soviet Union's Star City couldn't collaborate with America's Manhattan Projects forever, could it? Vol. 5 deviates from simply taking historical characters and creating a neat story about them, going as far as rewriting historical events so that they're manufactured and controlled by the two formerly friendly agencies. What surprised me is how good this volume is without the characters that made the first four volumes great. There is an emphasis on politics, and the seeming departure of my favorite character in Vol. 4 hasn't slowed down this series a bit, plus the characters in the background of this book can always come back to the foreground in future volumes. ****3/4

Highly recommended for all readers of entertaining comics!
One of my favorite comic book series. THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS keeps changing the status quo with each volume, sometimes each issue. The characters are twisted versions of the Atomic age scientists we all learned about in grade school. Likewise, the history of the comic's world (with special attention on the relations between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., for obvious reasons) is like our own history, as seen in a cracked mirror. The situations and dialogue are often laugh-out-loud funny, with everything from magic to aliens to monsters getting in on the fun.Read THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS. You'll thank me!

I have been reading Manhattan Projects since the beginning and it has turned into one of my surprise favorite series. This issue continues that upward trend in the series, and the characters become even more developed. I personally don't think the artwork is particularly amazing, but it is bright and well done. Overall a great addition to an ongoing series.

fun, but a step down in quality
This is a fun follow-up to the previous entries in the series, but in comparison to those previous volumes this one seems phoned in. The words-per-page are down, and the narrative speed slows. Much is put on hold (like Oppenheimer's story) and much else seems conventional rather than innovative. It's still a good read, but it's hard to not be disappointed given the creative maelstrom of the previous volumes.

Wraps up the series nicely
Wraps up the series to launch the spinoffs. It's hard to top the first arc (volume 1) but this one still delivers on the magic of buck-wild science.

It's Cold War History, but not as we know it.
The Manhatten Projects is one of my favourite series. It is well produced and very well written. I'd highly recommend The Manhattan Projects to anyone who enjoys alternate reality fiction, Stormwatch, The Authority, Planetary or any graphic novel/comic produced by this company.
