Comprehensive and gorgeous
I started knitting when I was about 3 years old (deemed a life skill by both my mom and grandmothers), became more serious about it when I turned 16 and wanting an outrageously priced vest from a famous Japanese designer, was informed that I could make that and given the yarn to do so. I then kept right on knitting through my 2 undergraduate degrees, medical school, two children, 3 godchildren, about a dozen nieces and nephews, my career and 30+ years so far of marriage. I’ve been seriously knitting for close to 40 years (50 if you count starting as a preschooler). I’ve hundred of knitting books— both inherited and purchased. This is a great book. It’s a deep dive into traditional Norwegian patterns and mittens. The charts seem clear and well laid out. There are lots of photographs— I haven’t had a chance to knit anything from it as yet because our 24 year old (whom I held off teaching to knit until kindergarten) has absconded with the book. Will see what appears for Christmas this year!

Beautiful book
This book is really beautiful - detailed history, techniques and patterns: so many patterns, some of which I'm sure can be adapted to other uses. Totally looking forward to trying some of them. It is printed in a font color easy to read, which sadly is not true of all books, but which will make it a pleasure to use this one. Shipping was fine, but the book itself had damaged pages in the upper right corner in the middle of the book (see photo, which shows some of the damage, and and also gives a sense of how nicely the patterns are printed). The damage is a bummer since I paid full price for the book and waited a month for it, but I will probably not return it as the text/graphics are not damaged and I do not want to wait for another month.

This book is incredible!
Great directions. Fantastic patterns. Written so anyone can understand how to do these. There are so many different design ideas. You can either make one from the whole pattern or design one of your own showing the motifs in the book. This is a treasure. I've made many of the mittens in this book, and the people I've gifted them to just raved about them. They make gorgeous mittens. I knit a bit more loosely than most knitters, so I needed to use smaller needles than suggested. Highly recommend this book!!

Fantastic Book!!!
This is a fantastic book, filled with information about the history of Sebu mittens and their patterns, how to make them, the sheep that produced the wool used to make the mittens, and loads of patterns! A must-have for any needleworker's library whether they knit or not. I'm currently using the patterns in it to make a cross stitch band sampler.

Historical treasure trove
The historical patterns and charts are a treasure trove of historical Norwegian glove and mitten knitting. A wonderful piece for any knitting library.

Best Selbu book ever
I have several books on Selbu mittens, some pattern books, some combined history and patterns. This is by far the best.So far have only skimmed it but am very impressed. It will be kept on coffee table in easy reach so I can look at it often. The history and about section is interesting and well written. I want to knit every pair of mittens in the pattern section. Some of the patterns have motifs I am familiar with but many are different. The charts are crisp and easy for my 70 year old eyes to see. There is also an empty chart of mittens you can use with the motifs to creat your own pattern. The only draw back I can see is that it assumes you are familiar with mitten knitting. I like knitting mittens, the charts make perfect sense to me. If I were new to mittens I would need some supplemental directions along with the given pattern, it would be well worth the effort.

An amazing world
The stories and history of these mittens are delightful; the patterns and instructions seem to be thorough and wonderfully accessible. The book is obviously written by a knitter - not only that but a knitter who has taught knitting and understands what the questions - little snags and problems -might be

Beautiful Resource for Knitters
I love this type of knitting with multiple charts and beautiful designs, it’s challenging and stimulating for me. This resource is something that I have been waiting for and missing from my library. 500 charts and 35 classic patterns is more than enough. I am very satisfied with my purchase and the charts are printed clearly. Instructions are written with abbreviations, easy to follow instructions for a knowledgeable knitter, but may be difficult for a beginner. Knit something beautiful for yourself from this book

A must for any knitter, beginner to experienced.
A must for any knitter’s library.I instantly fell in love. The historical data is so wonderful and really helps us “see” the knitters who created these wonderful patterns, plus a little bit of their lives. The patterns are so clear and inspiring. One could easily spend the rest of your life knitting only these mittens!

One of those books you just need a hardback copy of!
I got this first digitally and then on a whim, got a physical copy. The physical copy looks money well spent as it’s just gorgeous and you can see at a glance how good it is. As a girl who loves knitting fair isle I think this book will keep me out of mischief for a while!
