you don't need to learn Japanese to enjoy this. There is a plot
Onechanbara is a hack and slash zombie killing series with lots of skin. Fan service, that is. Luckily, you don't need to learn Japanese to enjoy this. There is a plot, and a simple walkthrough or faq will give you all you need to know. This is the 8th onechanbara game release, although many of them, including this one, have been ports or upgrades of a previous version.Onechanbar Z Kagura with Nonono! is an upgrade/port of the region locked Xbox 360 version, adding Nonono from the Dream C Club series as an unlockable character (by performing 20 special events in game). Aya and Saki from previous Onechanbara games are available as playable characters as well, but only through paid DLC. This requires setting up a Japanese PS account and adding funds to purchase the content. You will want to set up a Japanese account to unlock your free DLC costume pack, which is included with the game if you buy a new copy. The codes will not work with a U.S. account, but there are tutorials on how to set up a Japanese PS account at playasia.com. Once the content is installed it can be used by any other profile on your PlayStation 3. I love D3 Publisher games in general, they certainly aren't triple A blockbusters, but they are quirky, fun, and always weird!

A slightly worse controller scheme
I acquired this game after getting a Platinum on the PS4 sequel. I'm not able to read or understand Japanese, so although this game isn't translated I only encountered a few areas where I had to refer to the online guides or translations. Mostly for the item descriptions and some of the quest requirements. In general though this game lived up to what I expected of it. A slightly worse controller scheme, some dodgier quest requirements and some gameplay elements that simply weren't refined like they were in the ZII Chaos version. Content wise, some levels from this game return in ZIIC pretty much untouched from this game. There were some levels that didn't and were replaced by other areas and some were modified slightly or had their fight arenas adjusted a bit. Overall though there was enough difference to avoid feeling too much like a simple remaster. The extra Character NoNoNo!, can take some time to unlock. I played through the game at least once before unlocking her. She's a bit of a gimmick character and her attacks are designed more for looking 'cute' instead of making for smoothly flowing combos in combat. Still, she does have a ranged attack that the other two non-DLC characters don't have which makes her interesting to use. The lack of available upgrades for her is a bit of a let down though and her attacks feel a bit on the weak side so far. This makes her fun to try out but she isn't so overpowered that you forget about playing the other characters as well. Getting good enough with her to finish some levels will take some work, but it feels doable so far.Combat wise, it felt like even with all the upgrades you were still a bit under powered compared to some of the enemies, but I can't help but feel there is a depth to the combat system in this game that I am missing that may have been eased in execution for the sequel. Finding the right character and attack combinations felt like I had lots of room to still grow in this game even aside from getting used to the altered control scheme. This doesn't mean that the combat felt clunky, just that the attack combinations that worked well in the sequel didn't always work as well here. And I needed to spend some time rethinking my strategies before things started to feel more fluid again. Something that seemed to come a bit easier in ZIIC.Flaws aside, it's still a fun action filled game with the right amount of over the top fan service that makes it ecchi without being hentai. If you loved the PS4 game, this game is good enough and filled with enough differences in level and action to make it well worth picking up while you still can if you have a PS3, even at the import price.

Fun little guilty pleasure
Where to start? First off, shipping and handling, I received this game a full week before the estimated delivery date, awesome! I've ordered games online before and usually all they come in is padded envelope, the seller did this plus they actually had a small piece of bubble wrap inside the game case, preventing the CD from jostling around, nice touch! It was fully disclaimed that the game was used, even on the packaging itself, however, the CD was perfect, not a scratch, not even a hair! For the game itself, beyond section headers and catch phrases, nothing is in English, including the update (I guess?) and the market items. That said, you'll still get the gist of what's going on (super deep story ;P) and Google helps with translating menus and instructions.Playing the game is the guilty pleasure we all expect it to be, very similar to Onechanbara Bikini Samurai Squad, if you've played that, this will be very familiar even if you can't read it. I don't think there's any free DLC but the character Nonono is in the game (you gotta earn her though).

Translating is part of the fun.
The dialogue, subtitles, and some of the menus are all in Japanese. But, the game is simple and straightforward, so it really doesn't keep you from enjoying it.Plus, there's a few translation guides online to help you figure out game mechanics, quest goals, and story synopsis.

Great game!
I wanted a Japanese hack and slash chanbara (sabre weilding) game, and based on internet (youtube) reviews, this was the game. Indeed, it was. A bit on the expensive side, but I've played for more than 20 hours now, and I still enjoy it.
