Art in Theory: 1815-1900 An Anthology of Changing Ideas

An Anthology for Artists and Historians alike
I cannot say enough good things about this Anthology of the great minds of the early and late 19th Century. If you love art and the Romantic to the Impressionist eras and you love essay writing and good literature, you will love this book. But patience is warranted. It is over 1100 pages, of small print. As an artist, I find the ideas put forth to be not only enlightening, but inspirational. What is art? What is great art? It's many things but this compilation of great writings on the topic will help you understand those questions and more. Two thumbs up to the Editors.

A nice addition to my Art Library
A great assembly of articles written about the times that changed art forever. It covers both political and social implications on art. Great to have in my Art History Library.

Art History Theory from Artists not Just Theorists
Excellent compendium of art historical theory. At least you get to hear from the artists themselves, not just critics, though Baudelaire makes an interesting one.

An essential purchase
The 'Art In Theory' series is a brilliantly edited collection of must-have source texts, together with lucid and valuable introductions to the selections. These are books to be used, even the quality of paper used and the way the volume stays open at any page you chose is a joy. Quite genuinely, along with RS Nelson's "Critical Terms for Art History", one of the few text books I expect to wear out with use.

For those who seek to know...
If you ever want to know the beginning and origin of any art so social movement, the theory and philosophy behind it, how it changes over time. This is a great book to begin your critical inquiry. No nonsense... Include full credits of original source. Be aware, this is a highly academic book, not for easy reading but worth every bit.

The long and short of...
Handy extracts from key theoretical writers' main texts, good intros - a fine cicerone/starters' kit for anyone interested in that era.
