I'm not sure if the issues cats and dogs have with a candle is the same as parrots.** A: I know this is an old question, but I am here today - reading it, so I'm answering anyway. Paraffin wax releases toxins into the air that are deadly to parrots of all types and sizes. Many essential oils are unsafe as well (used for fragrance). 100% soy wax and essential oils formulated specifically for Avian safety are the only safe candles to use in a home with parrots, and even that is a highly debated subject. Also, the candle must have a cotton wick--no coating and no lead center. Based upon this question and answers, I feel it necessary to point out that no spray air freshener, plug-in air freshener, stick up air-freshener--basically all synthetic fragrances are lethal to parrots. Aerosol products of any type are lethal. Same thing with nearly all "cleaners". There are cleaning products made specifically for birds, but check the source claiming that it's safe. You honestly don't need anything other than vinegar and water and maybe some baking soda for any cleaning job. You can also use fresh squeezed lemon juice, and you can scrub with half a cut lemon with a little coarse salt. No smoke of any kind! Non-stick cookware can literally kill a bird within minutes, as the cookware off gases at a certain temperature. Same thing with toasters, toaster ovens, ovens, indoor grills, crock-pots, air fryers, clothes irons, curling irons, hair straightener--please do a simple google search of "X product safe for parrots", before purchasing any item that heats up and/or is cooked in before introducing to a home with parrots. Many stores will pre-burn a new stove/oven to remove the coating that releases the lethal toxins, you just have to ask them. Never use a self cleaning oven setting with birds. Air purifiers with ionizers are not safe (unless you can disable the ionizer). Many manufacturers are more than happy and willing to disclose the safety (or non safety) of their products for parrots--simply call or email them with the exact product model number and tell them you are specifically concerned for the product's safety for parrots. Birds don't have lungs like we do; they have multiple air sacks and are unable to process toxins out of the air before they enter their respiratory system. The toxins will overtake the bird(s) almost instantly, and oftentimes, you'll see or hear them land in the bottom of their cage with no warning or noticeable symptoms. I'm honestly not trying to "preach at you", but if you didn't know all of these facts, and have or plan to have parrots, please perform some thorough research asap. Take my word for it when I tell you that it is much easier to educate yourself rather than learn the hard way. We have gotten a few scents from this brand and all of them have been pleasant, if not a bit strong if you have a sensitive nose.
