A fun way to learn a whole new style
I am a violin player who has studied classical style violin at college level and I am thrilled to be exposed to a whole new style of playing. I am learning the different techniques used for fiddling and the more subtle differences between Irish, Celtic, Scottish and American fiddling. To be sure that I donโt mix up styles I have decided to focus on just one and this is what I have chosen. If you are a beginner, this might be something to take to your teacher. As an intermediate splayed, you these are all notes and fingerings you will understand. The book progresses in difficulty as it progresses. The CD is an example of each piece and has helped me to understand the different way to play the โfiddleโ rather than the โviolinโ. You can take this book to whatever level you want. Having performed classical style and studied its nuances of different eras and composers, I am having a great time learning a whole new way to make music. I love it, and the CD is very helpful because it shows me HOW the style should sound.I hope this has helped.

Excellent resource for Scottish fiddle music!
Many or maybe all of the songs can be found on YouTube played on the violin by one of the authors. Very helpful to not only listen but watch the techniques used.

Challenging but delightful!
I love that this is a "play-along" book, and that I get to play along with such a great fiddler. A wonderful collection of authentic Scottish tunes.

I liked having a CD to listen to while I studied the sheet music.I also liked the size of the print of the sheet music, the bowing suggestions and the notes on the music.

Strongly recommended
Having had a lesson from Iain Fraser at the Glasgow fiddle workshop I can attest to the quality of this book. The settings are accurate, bowings lively and an interesting selection is on offer here-buy it!

Scottish Fiddle Tunes
I purchased the Scottish Fiddle Tunes on the basis of having been very satisfied with the English and East European Fiddle Tunes from Schott's series. I'm glad I did: there are some really beautiful, sometimes haunting airs in this collection, and everything is - as usual with this series - very nicely presented. I also disagree with previous criticisms on Iain Fraiser's playing on the accompanying CD. I'm no Hillary Hahn, but I have a good ear for music, and I thought the pieces were beautifully played, and easily good enough for their purpose. In short, I'm thrilled with this one, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Scottis Fiddle Tunes
Nice book which has some really challenging music scores. Not recommend for beginners and more suitable for those with at least violine grade 3 or 4.

There is a nice selection of music in this book
There is a nice selection of music in this book, some pieces are quite complex, so ideal for grades 5 and up. However, as previously states the CD doesn't follow the sheet music exactly and there are lots of added embellishments in the recording that can make it quite hard to follow.
