Beyer brings it together
While probably not the best handicapping book even from the Beyer set, this is one of the more entertaining handicapping books around. You should read his earlier stuff first to see how he evolved as a handicapper to incorporate some ideas such as pace, trip, and form cycles, where earlier he had largely dismissed those. Where I spent a lot of time taking notes from other handicapping books, I spent more time turning pages and just enjoying a good read here.

Good read if you bet the ponies
I consider this a must read for anyone that likes to bet on horse races. There is no magic way to win money at the track but Beyer is the expert on speed ratings, and wether you are an occasional player or love going to the races regularly, you must have this book. It's very educational on how to separate contenders from pretenders.

Disappointing as it is more about his past betting experiences than developing a methodology
I understand that the author wants to provide context for his methods and tips but these experiences really come across more as page fillers and hime bragging about his exploits rather than assisting the reader in developing any wagering prowess. That being said, there is still much to be gleaned from this book as far as wagering strategies. I purchased it because it was recommended by Jim Cramer in one of his books. The jury is still out as I have yet to visit the races and attempt to employ what I learned.

A GREAT HORSE PICKING BOOK
I READ BEYERS FIRST BLLK IN THE SEVENTIES WHEN I HAD TIME TO GO TO THE TRACK. I DID NOT BET HORSES AGAIN UNTIL JUST RECENTLY. I THINK THIS IS A VERY GOOD BOOK FOR SOMEONE THAT REALLY WANTS TO LEARN HOW TO PICK WINNING HORSES.

Beyer on Speed was a well written very informative book
Beyer was a journalist for the Washington Post. I never liked his horse racing predictions in the Washington Post. So, I never bought any of his books until recently. I was pleasingly surprised. His books are very well written and very informative on the subject which I am interested.

Enjoyable and thought provoking
The writer is well known in the US for his speed ratings and while this book is based around them, he also assesses the merits of other analysis methods in his own individual way sharing his strong but always entertaining opinions. I found his thoughts in selecting combinations for multiple and exotic bets insightful and his anecdotes enjoyable. An easy read, this book best suited to someone with knowledge or racing and betting who likes a pinch of humour thrown in.

How-to on Picking Winners
Purchased as a birthday gift for my brother-in-law who is a big thoroughbred racing fan. He's delighted with it; is familiar with the author's reputation in picking winners; and, in fact, he's studying it now!
