'Too bad a person couldn't pick whom they shared the apocalypse with.'
I hated to finish this book. It is, by far, the longest and the best of the MOUNTAIN MAN series and I savored each page and I believe this is the end of the series.Gus is back - and I am so glad about that. House painter by trade four years ago when TEOTWAWKI hit, Gus is an average guy who just happens to be a great zombie killer (zombie, Moe, meatbag or whatever you might want to call the shuffling undead). The meatbags are wearing down - literally - and Gus thinks his life is pretty idyllic on the little community farm where he's living now, where the highlight of his day is to scratch his nether regions. But Gus finds out that zombies aren't necessarily the worst thing this old world now offers - too many of the humans that are left are looney tunes and dangerous beyond imagination.A mansion full of deadly surprises, road bandits, Ollie and Collie (two characters that are GREAT), Whitecap, Sick and Shovel, and author Blackmore has some interesting surprises in this last book of a stellar series.Gus matured as a person and as a fighter in WELL FED and all of the characters are well drawn and sometimes too believable. I loved the storyline and I liked how the book ended, with all the loose ends tied up with a big, black, odoriferous bow.If you are just chancing upon this series, do yourself a favor and start reading it from the beginning.1/2. The Hospital - the short story that starts out this series; also included in Cauldron Gristle .1. Mountain Man 2. Safari 3. Hellifax 4. Well Fed Be warned that this isn't a children's series. There is profanity, blood, guts and gore galore.Thank you, Keith Blackmore for giving me many hours of zombie entertainment in one of the best zombie/post-apocalyptic series out there.

Best of the Zombie apocalypse genre
Best of the Zombie apocalypse genre, hands down. I've just about read all of Mr. Blackmore's stories, and with the exception of Halifax, (I just wasn't man enough for it) all his Zombie stories (as well as his Troll Hunter and 131 series) are a so much better than the competition, I'm surprised others haven't followed his lead and write more realistic tales.Granted, there is little about the genre that can be termed realistic, but with Gus and his buddy, Cap Black, there is a fresh, new element introduced. A regular guy (Gus was a house painter in the past) who does his best to survive in the aftermath of the ZA. It is so refreshing to read a Zombie book where the characters are NOT special forces, well stocked with the latest in firearms and are not led by impossibly honest and ethical men. Or women. And let's not forget the sex bunnies. With this series, the characters are real, the scenarios are plausible, and most importantly, in Gus, we have a wonderful character. A real guy who you can root for and who often times gets his ass kicked to hell and back (try to find another story where the lead character gets put through a food processor and then gets flushed down the toilet), and yet still manages to shoot the two timing wench who tried to kill him as well as burn an entire city to the ground while totally drunk. That's what I call a man you can look up to.Additionally, Mr. Blackmore has resisted (to his credit) this deplorable new trend of authors milking their stories by adding unnecessary books, in a blatant and morally offensive attempt to make money. Take a lesson from Mr. Blackmore, and make your books stand alone and end the story when the story demands to be ended. Each one of his Mountain Man books can stand on its on. Bravo for you Keith! And pour another drink for Gus!

Loved it
What an exciting and perfect ending. Not exactly what I was expecting but better. Great way to end this part of the series. Or maybe there will be a spinoff with more adventures from Gus, collie and Scott. Can't wait to start the next book!

Absolutely Fabulous Keith!
Like many have already said, I did not want this series to end. I kept putting off reading this last book for that reason! However, I could not wait because I knew GUS WAS BACK!!!!!!In the first third of this book alone, there is more story and action than any recent book I've read in this genre. The second two-thirds is just good gravy! I will not go into any details because many have done so already. I only want to say that the book is a nice long read (which was great since I did not want it to end) and had a wonderful way of tying everything together at the end.The entire Mountain Man series is BY FAR THE BEST post apocalyptic/zombie fiction out there. Very well worth the read and the price.I have gone on to read pretty much all of Keith's Kindle collection and must say he does not disappoint. His other fantasy and horror books are just as good, if not better. I would encourage the Mountain Man series readers to continue with the rest of his books - he is VERY GOOD and his stories are worth reading.Thank you Keith for introducing me to Gus and the rest of the crew. It was a wonderful wild ride.Keep them coming!

Fantastic action novel
In this book 4 of the series, more unexpected twists for our “hero” Gus, a ton of great action-movie style fighting, and what I especially enjoyed was the way the author allowed us inside the mind of a “turning” zombie. I won’t say any more cuz I don’t wanna drop any spoilers for other readers!! PS- This book stands well on its own as an action- fiction, but you will appreciate it WAY more if you go back and read the rest of the series!

Boo Hooing.
This was a more detailed version of The Walking dead, Danny Boyle's 28 Days later,28 weeks later as well as Mr Stephen king's The Stand. Although without the special effects magic. What a great read this book was.I enjoyed it .The characters developed well and really got you hoping the good folks survived. There were a great many unexpected twists, you have a bizarre mind Mr Blackmore ,which I hope will consider another one or two more books .Maybe with more thrills n spills for Gus and Scott.I was sorry to finish it and more than a bit disappointed I have nowhere left to go.Boo hooing ,yet oddly satisfied.

Another great read
As others have pointed out this is not the best in the series, but it is still very good and well worth reading. I like the way the passage of time is shown by the fact that most zombies are now dead, and those that remain are 'crawlers'.The only downside I felt was that part of the book (the haunted house scenes) although very exciting did not really fit in with the rest as part of a narrative whole. It felt almost like a short story within a novel. Still, I could not put the book down and enjoyed it very much.

Great series of books
Picked up the original Mountain Man book on kindle for free. I wasn't expecting the well-paced and great storyline that I got. It hooked me in and kept me reading. I bought the other books in the series and now intend to start reading Keith's other books. The main characters are well developed and you can't help yourself willing them on. Ordinary, flawed people in extra-ordinary circumstances. Having been to NS and Halifax several times gave the book added interest for me, but the books could have been set anywhere and I'd still have found them as addictive. I couldn't put them down and am slightly sad I've reached the end of the series.

Kept me entertained, at the edge of my seat and wondering what would happen. So many stories, characters and plans. Throughly enjoyed.

4th of 4 books, unique twists
As a 4 book quadrilogy the mountain man books are good. The storyline has unique twists and deviates in some ways from the generic zombie apocalypse theme.
