During Hitler's anniversary speech on November 8, 1939, Georg Elser is arrested for possession of suspicious objects. Just minutes later, a bomb explodes immediately behind the Führer's lectern, killing eight people. When a map of the site of the assault and detonators are found on him, he is sent to be questioned, where he learns that his attempt has failed, Hitler had left the location 13 MINUTES before the explosion. For days, Elser is interrogated, for days, he holds out against their questions. Until he finally confesses – and relates the story of his deed.

Gritty reconstruction
- of another failed Hitler assassination, and of the domestic Third Reich. Attention to period detail and nuance give it a greater depth than most "Nazi movies:" here are Germans (not Americans or Brits) playing Germans. This story revolves around an unusual man, in that he acted purely out of individual conscience, giving him the will and purpose to do what others only dreamed or whispered. As such, he is so proud of his failed deed that he has no problem confessing it to the Gestapo. This honesty seems to throw his interrogators (the fate of one is an ironic twist thereof.) They never truly break him; he only admits that his "attentat" was not to be.It took a long time to give George Elser official recognition as a resistance hero; due no doubt to the end of the cold war. For Elser was affiliated with the Red (Communist) Front, although not a party member. Thus he could not be honored by the former East Germany, as he acted out of individual motives; nor by the Federal Republic, because he was, at least nominally, a "Red." The period politics at the small town level are excellently portrayed in the film, and rarely seen in Third Reich reconstructions; their legacy largely explains why Elser's memory was allowed to slip between the cracks of state until after 1990.Most of the deleted scenes should have been included. Nor is it explained why Der Fuehrer had to cut his meeting short - with bad weather on the way, his flight was cancelled and he had to catch a quick train to Berlin. These quirks of fate benefited Hitler throughout his "career." The evillest of men seem to have charmed lives that escape the innocent.A disturbing, not exactly uplifting, film; but one definitely worth a wide-eyed view.

Review with Pros & Cons without Spoiler and WARNING
Johann Georg Elser attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler and other high ranking NSDAP officers via a bomb with timer on 8 November 1939 at the Bürgerbräukeller in Munich. The bomb however went off thirteen minutes after Adolf Hitler had left, killing eight and injuring 62 others. This film is based on that story although some of his personal life is fictionalized. This film is definitely worth watching for the history worthiness alone. Here are the pros and cons as I see them:Pros:This film has fantastic cinematography and use of lightThis is another great German directed film by Oliver Hirschbiegel who also directed the film "Downfall" (another 5 star film). The acting is excellent.Left me asking questions and imaging "What If?"Cons:This is obviously not a very pleasant film, so if that is what you are looking for, you are not going to enjoy this.If you are one of those people who don't like to read subtitles and don't speak German then this film might not be for you.WARNING - If you are sensitive to watching torture, this film is likely not for you.

Excellent DVD!
Excellent DVD! This movie covers the little known Odyssey of one German Carpenter who came extraordinarily close to killing Al the Hitler, before World War II even started. Actually, let me correct that, wild or two it just started a month or two before that, but it was only the portion of World War II where Germany had invaded Poland. Peace was still very achievable at that point; especially of Hitler have been successfully eliminated. This man, with no formal higher education, was a brilliant Carpenter and an even more brilliant mechanical engineer. He learned the tools of the trade from his father, and he wasn’t necessarily political by nature. He just recognized the inherent danger that Hitler presented to his country, so he was determined to illuminate that danger. All of Hitler usually gave very long speeches, but on this particular day in 1939, at the annual gathering of his old “fighting comrades“, all of Hitler abruptly ended his speech early. How do you stayed for another 13 minutes, he would have been easily eliminated with the pounds of TNT that were hidden into a loadbearing support binder that was located directly over where Hitler was speaking. Literally, if the explosion would’ve killed them, the destruction of the loadbearing support binder would have caved in the roof , affectively crushing Hitler with tons of masonry. This movie also covers what happened to him when he was caught, specifically the torture that he had to endure at the hands of the German gestapo. A very very good movie. My only wish is that they had it in Blu-ray or UHD 4K.

Worthwhile look at one of the most important German attempts to assassinate Adolf Hitler
Oliver Hirschbeigel directed this movie, and his style is similar to that of his earlier movie, Downfall. It's very personal: this is as much a biography of Georg Elser as an account of his attempt to blow up Adolf Hitler in 1939.Working slowly, methodically and alone, Elser successfully planted a bomb in the Munich pub where Hitler commemorated the 1923 Putsch. The bomb went off exactly when it was supposed to; only problem, Hitler left 13 minutes before it exploded and was unharmed.Interestingly enough, Artur Nebe, the police official in charge of interrogating Elser, was implicated in the Julyb 20, 1944 plot to assassinate Hitler, and hanged in Spring, 1945. The Gestapo killed Elser in April of 1945, pretending he'd been killed by Allied bombing. If you're interested in the Third Reich, especially in German resistance to Hitler, you'll find this movie worthwhile.
