The opening is just for the standard size pencil. **Q: Does this sharpen Prismacolor Premier pencils well?** A: Well, contrary to another answer....I don't have a problem sharpening my Prismacolor Premier. The Derwent coloursoft is a tight fit (it's thicker than prisma), but it will work. Derwent Inktense, Faber Castell polychormos, Irojeten all sharpen just fine.
