Review: 5 HTryptophan is a Precursor to Serotonin... - Recently, my 20-year-old autistic son has been increasingly angry, upset and tending toward violence. I researched the problem and many doctors believe it is due to decreased serotonin levels. Most doctors would prescribe an SSRI, which is a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. Surprisingly, though, many times they don't work and most have other side effects that are not desirable. The SSRIs are designed to keep serotonin levels in the brain steady by not allowing serotonin to be reabsorbed by the body. So, I figured if SSRIs are hit and miss at best and the side-effects are not good, then why not just make a serotonin precursor available to the body to make as much as it needs? Makes sense, right? Disclaimer: I am NOT a physician, nor do I play one on the internet. This is my own personal experience that you can use or not use as you see fit. I am using a combination of 5HTP along with two other precursors of serotonin, gamma amino butyric acid (GABA...) and an Ayurvedic tinture called Shatavari. I use one dose of all three in the late morning, say around 11:30-noon and see how he feels before bedtime to give him another single pill, or both or all three serotonin precursors. His mood is very, very much improved since using the medicine in this combination and even don't need it at night most of the time. He has not has a violent spell since being on the medications. Granted, he wasn't completely out of control and tended toward anger and violence only occasionally but his mood has been altered such that he is much happier during the day and he sleeps well at night. For anyone struggling with a non-verbal autistic child or adult who is prone to depression or anger or violence, first of all, God bless you for hanging in there, and second, give these medicine combinations a try. They are not overly expensive and probably much cheaper than an SSRI if you pay out of pocket. OBVIOUSLY, don't stop taking your meds because of what you read on desertcart without consulting your doctor. Try the combination. It has worked for me and maybe it will work for you. :D

This sublingual tablet has a weird taste at first, but after the first try I became used to it. It is an incredible, near instantaneous mood booster. Do be careful not to take this within 2 hours of a B6 supplement for ideal use. (but do supplement B6!). The reason for this is that B6 is combined with 5-htp by the liver and then becomes incapable of entering the brain barrier. This is also the reason that sublingual tablets are by far the best method to take 5-htp as opposed to swallowing pills which travel through the stomach and the intestines. Through sublingual administration, the 5-htp enters the bloodstream directly, as opposed to pills which may irritate the stomach and intestines and then are filtered out somewhat by the "first pass" by the liver before entering the bloodstream, which reduces the effectiveness. Even with sublingual, it will however circulate and be subject eventually to the liver, although less so, which is why it is still important not to take B-6 within two hours of the supplement as directed. I am amazed by the effects of this supplement. When I feel down, and it isn't due to sleep, food, or other extenuating circumstances- i know it is a brain chemistry issue and it seems that this tablet helps balance that issue.
