Wegiel Handmade Wooden 18.9 Inch Mahogany & Sycamore European Professional Tournament Chess Board

I purchased this board for under forty dollars delivered so I was not expecting too much. However, I was very pleased with the quality and appearance. The inlay work is very good with nice even squares with no defects or unsightly filled in areas. The color of the mahogany and sycamore are nicer than the photo in the Amazon description. My board had slightly darker mahogany and whiter sycamore which is what I was hoping for. The bottom of the board appears to be of the same wood (sycamore) as the white squares. The corners butt up nicely on the board. Overall the workmanship is very good for a board in this price range.For the price I did not expect the board to be solid mahogany and sycamore. I don't care if it is or not because for the price I expect it to be veneered. With proper care it should last a lifetime. Don't drop a veneered board or get it wet and nobody will ever know the difference. The numbering on the board is painted and not inlayed. That is what I was expecting so no surprise. The numbers and letters are painted evenly and look fine. If you look closely you can tell they are painted but it does not look cheap.The board in made in Poland without child labor from plantation grown wood. It is refreshing to see something affordable that is not made in China for a change.I set the white balance on my camera to show the color of my board as it appears in my room. Lighting was from a window with noon sun shining outside.Now I need to replace my cheap plastic pieces for some nice carved wood pieces to do this board justice!

This is a nice board. This is the perfect board size for me.The veneer is really well executed. The wood grain is subtle but there. The wood choices and stain are excellent. I love the colors. It provides just the right contrast to my pieces which have a different stain. I like. I prefer my pieces not to blend in with the squares. I also like the position notations. I use this board to complement web based chess and it's nice to have the notations.The finish is perfect luster. I don't know how well it wears, it's still new. I doesn't need to get moved so I'm not too worried about durability. I've played several games on it and it's one of the best value products Ive purchased in some time.

I got some high quality wood chess pieces for $60 and had a max budget of $100 to work with. So I bought this board. While not a fancy highly polished board, this looks great and goes well with high quality pieces. You can't do much better for <$50. So the current price is a steal. The notation markings are painted, not embedded (unlike some boards that cost 2 or 3x), but that is a non-issue.Edit: After over a year of using it, it's held up pretty well. I've taken it to tournaments with me and it has withstood some nicks and dings and continues to serve that purpose well. When I had the budget, I did get a better solid wood board for home use, and so this board continues to be used at tournaments where we are required to bring our own sets. People don't insist on using their own sets when they see this board and my pieces, which is nice.

But if you must get a board, this is a good one to get!I picked this up for chess night with friends, because we were tired of the glass sets that I had. #NoGlassWith it, I got the triple weighted Staunton tournament pieces (http://a.co/80G576r) and they go together nicely. I've attached a picture for reference.The squares are 2" and the board itself is about 19"x19". It's nice and spacious, which is ideal for me. The bottom has four flat felt pads so you don't scratch your table or anything.The woodwork looks finished, and fits together well. It's not immaculate, but it's perfect for what I need. And for $35, you won't hear me complain. It's smooth, looks nice, sits flat, opaque, and is a good size board for the pieces I have. If we get more people for chess night, I would not hesitate to buy this same combination for a second set.

I "was" so excited to get my new chess board. the chess set I ordered cam with a silicon board and I wanted to have a hard board too.This board was a good deal for the price and looks really nice. BUT !!!! one corner was crushed and 2 other corners were chipped. I was so sad to see this. Sure, I might have expected that after a year or 2 or 5, I might do the same but not when it arrived brand new to me The main chess board is still playable. Just 3 of the 4 corners are bad. I am really disappointed and sad.I tried to return it for another but Amazon just offered a refund and not a replacement. then I saw where the Amazon listing stated Currently unavailable.We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock.". This explains why a replacement was not offered. So I guess I am stuck keeping it with its' defects.One last thing, while this says it is Wood. It is really MDF/particle board. I can tell by looking at the damaged corners. Seems you cannot get a real wooden chess

Just got this in the mail today, and it's gorgeous! This board is pretty ideal for the Wegiel Staunton No. 5 Tournament Chess Pieces w/ Wood Box (with a 3.54" King) which I bought last Christmas, in 2018. I suspect that the 4" King set would look even better on it. The photo is of that very set of chess men, on this board, sitting on the end of my cluttered kitchen table. The board is just perfect, and looks flawless... no "imperfections" in the wood (or wood grain, or what have you) that I can see. It came with four large felt "circles" on the underside at each corner to keep it from scratching a table top. It's also pretty solid, at just over 5 lbs. VERY pleased with this. It came in a thin, form-fitting box, but no carrying case, or anything like that. Fine with me; I got this as a "home chess set" anyway.

Five stars, as I just cannot find anything not to like about this board. Just recently returning to chess after a hiatus of some 30+ years, I decided I needed a real tactile, hands-on board and pieces to get a feel for the game again. There is really nothing to dislike about this board that was made in Poland. The size is perfect, which appeals to my ageing eyes. So much better than a 2-D glass screen! I play games against the computer, and replicate the moves on the board, and find the whole hands-on effect to be extremely important. The finish is not overly glossy, which can be distracting. Just a nice satiny matte. I was a tad worried about in-transit damage, based on some previous reviews, but it seems those issues have been addressed and addressed spectacularly. The board was packaged with hard plastic corner guards, surrounded by cellophane wrap, surrounded by bubble wrap and then in it its own box, and finally in an Amazon box. No way this bad boy was getting damaged unless perhaps passed through a wood chipper! The item arrived as promised, in a few days.The colours are excellent, the woods used being mahogany, sycamore and birch, and there are no scratches or dings of any kind. The weight is moderate without feeling like an anchor to carry about. Obviously this is not portable as more travel-centered boards (roll-ups or case-becomes-board combos). It is meant to grace a coffee or chess table (and looking pretty damned nice too!) The bottom is smooth finished with felt pads at the corners. I prefer that to a full mat of felt on the bottom, which I had on a board long ago, and which tends to peel and wrinkle over time. Be sure to match any chessmen with the #5 standard. I ordered the Husaria # 5 set which was a perfect match (reviewed here separately).The squares are nicely delineated by a border around the perimeter of the board, and the board includes algebraic coordinates (A-H and 1-8 ) for learning, teaching and helping record moves. Well-made, well-packaged, fast shipped. As I said, nothing not to like here. Great purchase experience. 5 *****

Pour commencer, zéro pointé à Amazon qui a très mal protégé l'objet dans un carton beaucoup trop grand. La photo montre tel que je l'ai reçu, il n'y a clairement pas assez de protection. Ca ou rien c'est pareil. Ca n'a pas loupé, il est arrivé avec un coin cassé !L'échiquier en lui-même ne vaut pas son prix. beaucoup de défaut de finition (voir photos)Je ne recommande pas du tout cet article.

Se trata de un bonito tablero rechapado con sapelly y sicomoro, de muy buena presencia y con un campo de juego amplio, al que, por su precio, no se le puede exigir en los detalles de los ingletes o en las capas de barniz la perfección de otros que cuestan entre el doble y el triple, aunque está, en general, bastante bien acabado. Las grafías alfanuméricas no están incrustadas, sino adheridas, y le quedan bien.El mío llegó con las esquinas íntegras, en su propia caja, dentro de un embalaje de cartón. No estaría mal que se protegieran las esquinas con ángulos de espuma o plástico de burbujas para evitar chafaduras antes de introducirlo en el embalaje de envío.Por 36,80 euros que me costó, me parece que he comprado un tablero más que digno, para muchas horas de entretenimiento y bonito, sin pagar de más.

Muy buena calidad y excelente protección del producto a la hora de recibirlo. A pesar de que se demoró en llegar el vendedor estuvo siempre en contacto y notificando. Muy bueno.
