Good Product, Lengthy Installation
Good product, but it doesn't come with a cord. And, it won't accept one of those snap in cords. It has two wires that twist onto a standard cord with two wires and a ground wire. I connected mine to an existing cable that was heavy duty. It was a bitch fitting it into the wire cavity, but eventually it fit. I used the existing drain rather than the one it came with. Installation took two hours because of that heavy duty cable. I had to clip off a too-long ground wire, then struggle to fit it around the screw. Otherwise, the installation went as described in the instructions. Working under the sink was a bear, but my headlamp made a big difference in placing the screwdriver and seeing what I was doing. The disposal works and isn't that loud. The original disposal, also an Insinkerater, lasted 35 years, so I got my money's worth there. And, I should mention, I was able to use it's housing for the new one. I wonder if I can recycle the old unit.

Easy install - Relative to doing anything under the sink.
Did a kitchen refresh after 20 some years. This included a new countertop. Well, if you get a new countertop, you get a new sink. A new sink, a new garbage disposal. The original disposal was still working but very noisy and shook everything on the counter. It went with the old countertop, so I did not have to remove it. That made the job more tolerable. Who likes crawling under a kitchen sink at 70? In-Sink-Erators always seemed to be a good brand and the price seemed decent enough. 1/2H replacing a 1/2H. Package came with all of the parts necessary to install the garbage disposal. However, keep in mind that if you are attaching a dishwasher to it, you may need to get an additional adapter to attach the drain line to the garbage disposal. You may also need to get the proper wire connector to attach the electric line to it. Check these two things out before you get started and it will save you some frustration. Installation is straight forward. Just read the instructions and follow them. I did just what the instruction said to do and how. There were no leaks, runs or errors. I would suggest taking some thought to how it is to hook up to the drain line. Make sure you have it turned to a position that will line up with how you want to attach the drain line. You will need to attach connector part to the sink so as to allow you to attach the GD to it in a way (position) that will line it up properly once the GD is turned into place. The somewhat difficult part for me was getting the electric line attached. Just awkward working under the sink in a tight spot. Once attached and the plumbing done, it was now time to try it out. Wow, what a difference. Smooth and just a hum. No rumbling and shaking. Works as expected. I had to get my wife to come in and listen to it. No longer will she have to catch things vibrating off the countertop. Score one for me!

I Like This Much Better than My Previous GE Unit
I've owned InSinkErators before and the Badger 5 1/2 is similar to the one I owned before. I've had two basically. So this is same as the Badger 500 from Home Depot but costs about $30 less. Needless to say I'm happy with purchase. However, more importantly this was pretty easy to install. It took me a total of 2 hours to install. Actual work was more like 20 minutes. The rest of the time I kept reading and rereading the instructions or I was constantly washing my hands because well it's plumbing work and it's dirty. After installation this works great. It's powerful - my other disposal is 1/3 HP. It's pretty quiet or at least quieter than my old GE disposal. My first disposal lasted at least 10 years. I sold my house with this unit installed so I'm not sure what its status is now. This second one I've only had for about 1 month and it's working great. If I remember to do so, I'll update a few years later. A really cool feature I like about InSinkErators is that if you get things lodged in the grinder and it won't spin, you can use a screwdriver and turn the motor grinder from the bottom of the unit manually to dislodge whatever is stuck to it. With the GE model I had replaced, the troubleshooting guide suggests using the end of a broomstick to try to turn the grinder. I think this is stupid compared to the feature in the InSinkErator. Maybe this is a preference thing but I like being able to use a Philips screwdriver in lieu of a large broom handle, which makes it hard for me to know if the grinder is turning or not. I only have experiences with InSinkErator and GE. I like InSinkErator better because of this feature. To be fair the GE is probably a bit easier to install but given I'll only install this once in a very long while and things sticking to the grinder happens at least a few times a year. This feature is worth way more to me than the easy install, which is only a few minutes difference anyway. My suggestion before installing is to review a few YouTube posts on installing this device. If you do there are just a couple of major takeaways. 1) Knock out the little piece in the Dishwasher connector if you have a dishwasher - VERY IMPORTANT.. 2) It may be best to put the drain connection thing before you put the disposal under the sink - this consists of the gasket, a stainless steel ring to tighten the gasket and the extension to the connector, and the connector piece, which comes with the unit. Another suggestion is to get the InSinkErator CRD-00 Power Cord Kit. You can probably use your old one but if you're going to go through the trouble of installing a new disposal it's probably better to spend an extra 8-10 bucks to make sure all the pieces are new and most importantly are available when you start the project. Other than that, if your dishwasher and sink drain set up is pretty standard, this should be real easy to do. First time I ever installed one the drain set up was pretty messed up so it took me a long time about 6-7 hours mostly having to drive back and forth to Home Depot or Lowes. Second time my drain set up was pretty standard it only took me 2 hours but only about 20 minutes of actual work. Good luck.

Reliable, Powerful, and Exactly What a Garbage Disposal Should Be
I replaced a 15-year-old disposal that had finally given up the ghost, and after researching options at various price points I landed on the InSinkErator Badger 5. Several months of daily use later, I can say with complete confidence this was the right call — a no-nonsense, hardworking disposal that handles everything I throw at it without complaint. The 1/2 HP motor is more capable than you might expect for this class of disposal. Vegetable scraps, fruit peels, coffee grounds, small chicken bones, pasta, rice — it processes everything quickly and cleanly without jamming or straining. I cook from scratch daily and put this unit through genuine heavy use. It has never once jammed or required a reset in months of consistent operation. Installation was straightforward and well-documented. I'm a capable but not professional DIYer, and I had the Badger 5 mounted and running in under an hour using basic tools. InSinkErator's Quick Lock mounting system is genuinely clever — if you're replacing an existing InSinkErator unit the swap is even faster. The included instructions are clear and the hardware is all quality. The operation is notably quiet for a disposal in this price range. It's not silent, but it's a smooth, contained hum rather than the grinding mechanical roar of cheaper units. Running it during a dinner party conversation no longer requires pausing the discussion. Cleanup under the sink stays clean and dry. The seals are solid and I've had zero leaking issues since installation. InSinkErator has been the gold standard in garbage disposals for decades, and the Badger 5 perfectly represents why. It's dependable, durable, honestly priced, and does its job every single day without asking for any attention whatsoever. Sometimes that's exactly what you need from an appliance. A five star workhorse that earns it the honest way — by simply never letting you down.
