How deep are the steps?

The lower fold-out step measures 12" x 5 5/8" and is 10 1/2" above the floor, the top platform measures 15" x 7 7/8" and is 21 1/2" above the floor.

Does the bottom step rotate on a wood dowel or on something metal?

It is a wood dowel that appears to have metal posts in the ends. Works very well.

Description reads that the stool is "crafted from solid/composite wood." What exactly does that mean?

It is not made from any composite wood materials. I own one it's made from solid oak. It's well constructed, durable and attractive. You only have to pick it up to realize there's nothing fake about it. As far as I'm concerned it's an editor's descriptive error.

What are the shipping dimensions of this item please?

I can't recall. It was flat packed and I believe the dimensions are about the same as the side panel of the step stool.
