One of the greatest books of our generation.
I loved this book as a kid.I remember waiting for the book fair days to come, the excitement of what there may be. When I bought this book, I was so happy as a child. Now I have children of my own, and we were telling ghost stories by the fire.I realized - I know the perfect resource, and I went online and found the kindle edition of scary stories! It was everything I remembered and it was a hit at the fireside ghost story chat! The illustrations drive home the overall spook factor of this book. If you haven't read it, or heard these stories, grab it!If you have, but don't own it, GRAB IT!Seriously this is a great value - there are also 2 more books in the series which are well worth it - but nothing beats the original!

Nostalgia!
This book is nostalgic for me. As a kid, we'd hide in the closet and read this book by flashlight. Back then, the stories were scary and stuck with you. I made sure to buy this version of the book to get the original artwork that was in them. Reading them now, the stories are definitely directed toward children (as described) and aren't quite as terrifying as I remember, but still fun to read through and remember. What makes this a complete five star for me is the illustrations, which in my opinion, are even scarier as an adult!Great purchase, great memories. I recommend it, especially for those who grew up with these books! Also, I bought a used copy to make sure that I got the version with the original drawings. There is a newer version out there that doesn't have Stephen Gammell's work in it, so beware about that if you're buying it for the art work!

Not all are created equal
Loved this book, love this book, will probably love it till the slithery dee gets me (book reference). A great bit of nostalgia for many a horror fan. Though the stories are well enough, it is with the accompaniment of Stephen Gammell's art that make these books truly unique and fear provoking. I urge you to shop the used books ...not only to save cash but to have a higher chance of getting the original books. The newer editions have less than original illustrations that just dilute the whole experience. That being said, buy used and start with the first of the classic trilogy! As a side: my copy came as an original in nearly mint condition. Luck.

NOT THE ORIGINAL ARTIST!
Because I remember loving and being absolutely terrified at these books when I was a kid, I recently purchased all 3 and just received them today. To my horror (and not in a good way) I found that they've published them with a DIFFERENT ILLUSTRATOR! With all due respect to Mr. Helmquist (the new guy) and certainly to Mr. Schwartz (the original author), these books were made for me by the art of Stephen Gammell. I'm sure they did this because so many parents tried to get the books banned in their day because of the ghastly drawings, but this is really a tragedy. I would suggest looking elsewhere for original copies of the books as they should be seen. Don't buy them here - you'll be missing out on part of what made these books so wonderful in the first place.

3 books or 1 book? Not sure, but overall quality is great nonetheless 👍
Not sure what's going on with this but I'm a bit lost on how everyone in the reviews are showing a 3 in 1 book and I only received the first one in the series. The book itself is great quality and exactly how I remembered it.

Better for young adults
Interesting read and the stories are ones I had never heard before, which was a plus. Most of the stories were a bit long to try to remember to tell around a campfire, but good for a fun read.

These are not "scary stories..."
... but rather a book that explains how to "tell" scary stories. Took this camping with my Granddaughter to weave a few tales for her, but I was sadly disappointed. I did not expect a book that was designed to teach me how to tell a scary story, and even so - these instructions are written for a 10 year old. Lucky i also brought a copy of the Monkey's paw!

Great illustrations
I bought this collection of scary folk tales for kids because of the illustrations. The tales were a bit 'meh', even when I tried to stick my ten year old's head on (super glue is best). There was actually one - The Viper - I remember being told when I was younger. They are not terribly scary though. The illustrations were excellent, I love Stephen Gammell's style, very creepy.I recommend for a jaunt down memory lane as an adult or a bit of fun for a kid.

Gammell is king.
This is the one to buy. Stephen Gammell talent for illustrating the scariest pictures you will ever seen is unsurpassable, especially by someone as uncreative as Brett Helquist. Helquist is a great artist, but he lacks the artistic impulse of Gammell and he certainly has less of a grasp of the psychology or what it means, or takes, to scare someone. Helquist has a tendency to depict 'scenes' that are happening on the page, whilst Gammell, almost always places you, the reader, as the would-be victim. The unwilling focus of a strangled-to-death girl, of shadowy figures in the mist. Helquist also likes to be overt, and interpret to a frustrating extent. The amount of detail in his illustrations strips them of their affect. Gammell has an almost minimalist approach, forcing you to enter the darkest and most demented recesses of your own mind to fill in the gaps, to finish the story. You never feel in danger looking at Helquist's drawings, ever.Don't buy the re-release of the book, buy this one, the original.

Missing its heart
Not as terrible as everyone says but still doesnt come close as the original books. I only bought this book just to see if the new artwork really is that bad. Good news is that the new artwork is unique and effective sometimes. However, it doesnt nearly have enough impact as the previous drawings did. By removing the old drawings the books feel incomplete and less scary. Overall I would only recommend this to someone if they can find it for dirt cheap like I did.

Partner loved it
I grew up with these books; they're probably what made me decide I was never doing horror ever again lol. But hubby, who loves scaring himself, hadn't. He's looking forward to the movie. :)
