Forgiveness: A Lenten Study

I facilitate a women's Bible study, and had used this book a few years ago as a basis for a Lenten study. Although the doctrine is a little off what is taught by our church, it was very interesting and gives a good perspective of the process of forgiveness. I would recommend being a Berean in approaching the philosophy presented, and compare what is written with Scripture on the subject.

Everyone in our group had experiences forgiving someone and asking for forgiveness.The book gave a good guide for our discussions.

We began our study last Thursday right after Ash Wednesday so we have only had one night together to discuss “Forgiveness, A Lenten Study. All I can really say is so far I received great comments from those attending the study. Forgiving can be a very difficult time in the lives of many of us during specific situations and we, in our group of nine, are hoping to gain better insight in getting through those times whether it pertains to individual or community based forgiveness.

I enjoy reading Marjorie Thompson very much. Although this is a Lenten Study, it's good for any time of the year. A bit short, but packed with great insight. I recommended that our Adult Education Committee use this within the year.

Proceed with caution. The author relies on questionable Biblical translations, specious arguments, and false equivalences. At times, she seems to suggest that everyone is guilty, so no one is accountable, which is straight up toxic.This book might be useful for conflict resolution (she stole several established conflict resolution techniques and repurposed them — without attribution — as study guide exercises), but is potentially damaging to abuse survivors, crime victims, or anyone suffering from PTSD or any kind of trauma.

I thoroughly enjoy this resource for teaching on forgiveness. I intend to use it as a Lenten study. The chapters are short and easily readable for congregants. The exercises are not silly or elaborate, but doable. This is a excellent book for use individually and in community.

Using this as a Lenten program at out Church. I think it will work well with small group discussion groups.
