Terrible book full of outdated research and mindless speculation
I can't believe this book is still in print. Is the area of college student development so backward that people seriously pay attention to the material in here? The majority of the book rests uncomfortably on a foundation of psychoanalytic theory. No serious psychologist has taken psychoanalytic theory seriously for about 20 or 25 years, yet Chickering and Reisser seem comfortable living a generation behind the times and acting like nothing's wrong with that. With this perspective, I can't understand why this book is still in print.Chickering and Reisser's book is mostly theory, although they do have a modest amount of research backing them up. However, much of their qualitative evidence is of mediocre quality and large chunks of what they say has no studies to support it. (In case you're wondering, theory without evidence is called "speculation.") With such poor corroboration, it boggles my mind that anybody would bother to pay attention to what they say.Stay away from this book. Surely there are better researched books out there on student development. This one is atrocious and almost a miscarriage of science.

An important classic about the development of college students
Chickering and Reisser's theory is a highly important, classic theory about how college students develop personally and interpersonally throughout their college years. This volume is on many of the shelves of student affairs professionals across the nation and should be on the shelves of the others. It can also help others who work with college students -- and perhaps even their parents -- understand some of the normal developmental patterns experienced by traditionally aged college students during their college years. The theory isn't perfect, and it could use some revision. It would be nice to have a new edition of the book with a revised theory. Still, this classic work has, and should have a central role in the study of college students for years to come.

An Important Text
This is THE historical text on student development. I read a previous review that said it was out of date - it's no more out of date than any other 1970's conceptual piece on human development (that's the original date). It is an invaluable resource for serious student development specialists to consider and from which to gain initial insight and on-going models. I just purchased my second copy in order to continue my research - yes there are many others, however if not for this book, and Chickering, there wouldn't be those more recent books - an excellent resource.
