Use this to walk my dog to the dog park, she can walk off leash while hunting for squirrels and then I pull out the leash if someone comes walking by.

Since Rome is a good boy and generally stays by my side off-leash, this is perfect us. We've used this collar for about 8 months. Whenever we venture out, Rome conveniently carries his own leash! I simply draw the lead when rules require him tethered, to cross busy streets and parking lots, or if he's tempted by scurrying critters, etc. The lead is rather short (about 3 ft); just barely within my comfort range for my low pooch and draws and retracts reliably, smoothly and completely when I let go. It's too short to snap back and startle or injure him and it never tangles because it's a smooth, quality tape rather than a cord. I have tried the few other styles out there, but they have cords and it's a game of chance on whether they will draw and retract properly. Though they haven't failed completely yet, they have a fabric sheath which gets dirty and don't look as nice or feel as sturdy. The only one of that inferior type available is a knockoff of an original I bought years ago that was American-made. It drew and retracted better than the newer knockoff, but I am much more confident with this brand/design, in any case. We like it so much, I'm back buying a couple more in case this one disappears from Amazon. I haven't found this model anywhere else and believe it's made in Germany. I'm not sure it would last for a bigger dog or one that pulls constantly, but is worth a try.People see us with it and are surprised and impressed by a dog carrying his own leash. Truthfully, it's fun when someone comes up to scold me: "You can't be here... That dog needs to be on a leash!" I say "okay" and pull the leash from his collar. Viola! Reminds me of Louis CK's skit where he plops down in the courtyard of his swank NYC apt building in a dirty old T-shirt and a snooty resident asks why he's sitting there. He says "because I'm tired," and the man says "this is private property," and Louis says "I don't believe in that." So the man runs up to building security in a huff and they tell him Louis is a resident. Louis rejoices in the look of confusion and embarrassment on the man's face. It's kind of like that. ; )Highly recommended!

My dog is well-behaved enough that she stays by my side when we walk. This collar/leash is perfect for when rules require a leash, being safe around traffic, or when she's tempted to say hi to another pup before permission. This is my 2nd time purchasing this collar as I had great luck with the first (game changer for quick potty breaks, days at the beach, etc.). However, the collar recently retracted too far and no longer recoils back into the collar. I was hoping to see if there may be a warranty available but was unable to reach out to the company. All in all, even though I have to repurchase, I definitely feel that I got a great value for the price paid and am willing to repurchase happily for the convenience that this collar brings to my pup's life.

First off, the housing on this seems like something cheaply 3d printed. Don't know if that is true but regardless it is a soft plastic.The wouldn't be a huge problem but the opening where the leash comes out is oriented 90 degrees to the spool.The result is that the near edge of the leash saws against the soft housing. this is even worse since there is no lock and movies constantly in and out when being used. Cut 2-3 mm out of it in less than week.if the spool aligned with the leash and/or the housing instead came away as a handle and could friction lock the leash this would be a perfect solve of what is in my opinion a perpetually poorly filled niche of leash need.

Kinda clunky. Looks uncomfortable on my boy. He is ok with it. Has to be for a well behaved dog who iis mostly off leash.

Design flaw!I wanted to love, but … The seam on the handle is not totally flash, which gets caught, not allowing it to retrieve all the way in, causing a safety concern as a her paw can get stuck.

My male bichon is very obedient and can be trusted...until the neighborhood females go into... season...then he will turn on a dime.This collar with..grab him quick..leash attached is fantastic. Also when he gets a new collar, sweater, etc .he likes ...he wants to flaunt around like a stud.

It can save you a ticket for sure . A cop cannot claim you don’t have leash . Besides it’s very easy to use .

Love this leash..its our second one! Works great for our rescue that has leash on/ off issues.
