Wilton B.A.S.H 12" Sledge Hammer, 4 Lb Head (20412)

Best hammer I've ever used. Had original for 5 years. Still beating stuff with it. Got another for a back up because other People borrow the original. Probably would buy a third. Probably will become a family heirloom.

So, I needed a good way to 'start' splitting wedges into hardwood rounds so I could get splitting them into firewood. Trying to get wedges to 'stick' so you can whack them hard without them flying when you whack 'em hard is pretty important...flying wedge is not good for safety! Trying to get wedges to get started with a large sledge is actually pretty difficult due to how heavy and unwieldy they are, I needed a good mini sledge, and this one is the ticket! I already own the 10 lb 36" version of this maul - Wilton 21036 10 lb. BASH Sledge Hammer with 36-in Unbreakable Handle . As with the 10lb version, this is tough and rugged. I smash it in to wedges until they are firmly in place, then finish the job with the 10lb maul. Works great! After splitting up about 20 cords of wood, this is still in good shape, handle has great grip, and handle is firmly attached to the head. No notable damage. Great!

Best step up from the 2lb. The 2lb is great weight for your belt but this four pound is just right for the extra strength of a beater

The only reason you'll ever need to replace this is if it gets forgotten at a customer's yard after getting seized brakes unstuck on a T880 in the mud and rain. The best hand sledge I've ever owned.

I just tried my new 16 inch sledge hammer to split some firewood with a wedge and also with a standing splitter with ring. Result is there is a huge difference between a 14 inch and a 16 inch sledge even though they both have a 4 lb. heads. I am very pleased with it even though it was a little pricey but those two inches matter greatly with the impact force. The hammer looks well built and sturdy and the larger wood chunks have no chance of not splitting. Very much fun.

I climb with this hammer and it has a comfortable handle. Best hammer I own. Its nice to have a hammer that only requires one swing to get the job done along with knowing it wont fall apart after a year of use. I use this hammer for building steel structures for staging and would highly recommend this brand for those serious about buying a tool once.

The Wilton BASH is overbuilt and heavier than other hammers of the same head weight, but it's also well balanced for one-hand use, has a comfortable grip, and is about as tough as a sledge can get. Overstrikes aren't much of an issue with a 12" handle, but the steel core in the BASH will outlast just about every wood and fiberglass handle out there. More importantly, the thick rubber grip offers excellent vibration absorption, in spite of the steel core, making it a pleasure to use. I've been doing household demolition with this hammer for a few months, wrecking cabinets, countertops and furniture with ease. The BASH sledge is up there with the pry bar as one of my favorite wrecking tools, and not just because lifting it makes me feel like Thor.

It’s an awesome little sledge, it’s about twice the size of most single hand hammers but can still be used one handed. Big enough to be used with two hands as well, great for more compact work spaces or if you do not need to have a full size sledge weighing you down all day. The head is smaller than what is shown in the picture so if you need more that an inch between the striking face and the handle you might be disappointed. I use mine for moving walls and busting up small patches of concrete foundation so works fine for me.

Perfect hammer for ironwork. The weight, balance and 16" handle make it an excellent choice for your tool belt. Safety lanyard hole in handle is a nice touch too Edit: Been using this since September 2015, a lot. As an ironworker, I’ve had to have a few washers welded onto my belt which definitely compromises the way the steel rods in the handle and the rubber hold. That being said this is still the best sledge I’ve used. My handle near the head has cracked (I would assume largely due to the heat of the welding screwing the rubber up) and a few hairline cracks mid way. Also if you’re wondering if a 4 lb hammer is too light for ironwork, it’s not. Talking to other guys on my crew, everyone agrees it feels as heavy as a 6lb (probably the steel pins and heavy rubber handle) and it has great balance. Great for tight places too. I recently got a great price on their 6lb hammer and it feels like it’s 8-10lbs
