The ancient warrior culture of Japan produced a sophisticated martial philosophy that we know today as Bushidoโthe Way of the Warrior. In Samurai Wisdom , author Thomas Cleary provides five critical new translations of major Japanese works on Bushido. The writings of the scholar Yamaga Soko and his disciples are among the most lucid expositions we have of the core ideas and philosophy underlying the Samurai's disciplined way of life and outlook. Together they provide an in-depth, practical guide to character building and conduct according to the precepts of Bushidoโa code for professional warriors that retains as much relevance in today's world as it had when these works were written 400 years ago. Yamaga's writings inspired the transformation of the Samurai from a feudal class of warriors under the command of the Shogun to a group of prominent individuals with significant intellectual, political and moral leadership and influence. The works translated in Samurai Wisdom for the very first time are as timeless and essential today as the works of Sun Tzu, Musashi and Clausewitz. The five Japanese works on Bushido translated in Samurai Wisdom are: The Way of the Knight by Yamaga Soko The Warrior's Rule by Tsugaru Kodo-shi Essentials of Military Matters compiled by Yamaga Takatsune The Education of Warriors by Yamaga Soko Primer of Martial Education by Yamaga Soko Review: Great Sources of Warrior Psychology. - Great book in superb condition. Collectors item. I received it long ago. Treasure of samurai wisdom. Review: Absolutely Excellent! - Samurai Wisdom is absolutely excellent. Not only does this book provide the reader with a deep understanding of the samurai mind and their values, but if studied and applied, it also provides the reader with many valuable principles to live by in today's world. This book is a good translation of five literary works concerning Bushido from Yamaga Soko (1622-1685). In my opinion, this is one of Thomas Cleary's best books (and I have enjoyed many of his books). I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Samurai history, Bushido, or the warrior lifestyle, or who just plain wants to develop his or her character in a world becoming more and more void of character and integrity. This book is excellent. Don't just read it, but apply it to your life. 5 Stars! Bohdi Sanders, author of the award-winning bestseller, Modern Bushido: Living a Life of Excellence

With great wisdom comes.......
Great read if you're a ninja that never trained. I have no idea what they are talking about in this book. I thought I'd become wiser but that's not the case here...... Maybe crazier?

Confucianist as Samurai
This excellent translation of the writings of Confucianist samurai Yamaga Soko and some of his followers goes a long way in correcting the false impression created unintentionally by Cleary and others that Bushido was a predominantly Zen ethos. On a side note, the leaders of the famous 47 Ronin raid were inspired by Soko's writing.

great
not my favourite cleary text on samurai philosophy and wouldnt recommend as a first book in however i still enjoyed reading it it does drift quite hard into how to organise military structures and intricacies of medieval warfare etc that at times got a bit boring to read but loads of fascinating insight into the code of conduct and culture that underpinned japanese society at one point and a very interesting read from a unique perspective of lives living it at the time
