Mississippi in the Jim Crow South of the 30's.
Wanted to read this as a preface to her excellent book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Part of a series, set in the Jim Crow South.

Song of the Trees
I have a high school age niece who is a reluctant reader. For Christmas last year I sent her a book or books every month. Librarian me chose from the Newbery Award books. I wanted her to learn about historical things she would never see in her social studies textbooks as well as various social issues that affect people. Song of the Trees sets the stage for Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and the sequel Let the Circle Be Unbroken. Which traces the hardships of a black family farming their own land in the 1930's and the social restrictions and injustices they faced. My niece and I had some good discussions about the books.

Classroom Read
Read a couple of these in my 6th grade English class! Wanted to buy the whole set so I can go back and refresh my memory and see what has happened since.

Buy this one
I didn't know that this prequel to Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry existed. Very short entertaining read.

We privileged white people of America need to realize life hasn't been so good to colored folks
Mildred Taylor's books should be required reading in schools. We privileged white people of America need to realize life hasn't been so good to colored folks. Her books were real eye-openers to me.

So vivid
I'm right there with all the details you have in these stories. Thank you oh so much for this treasure.

I was disappointed
I expected a more engaging story and a stronger picture of racism. The book and the characters did not hold my interest.

A very short story!
Puffin really shouldn’t sell this as a book, it’s only a short story. I liked it but it really isn’t a ‘book’! Also it’s advertised as having 80 pages … it does not, the story itself was about 40 pages (some of which were illustrations) and the rest is either adverts for other books or an excerpt from ‘roll of thunder’ which I already have… even so I don’t think it adds up to 80 pages.Love Mildred Taylor though. I’m an adult and never came across these books until now.

Sweet
I remember reading this book a few years backI particularly enjoyed reading the book again as its the only one in the series that talks about the trees and the connection with the Logan family. The Land (prequel) is a broader insight with the connection and truly a delight to read

Nothing like its sequel 'Roll of Thunder, Hear my cry'
I read the sequel 'Roll of Thunder' in school and was eager to read the rest of the books. However Song of the Trees is just a 40pg book that my 8yr old brother could just as easily read. If you're an Adult skip to Roll of Thunder and don't waste your money.
