Stones to messages
Lapidary, by Richard Marx Weinraub is a grouping of inanimate gemstones with poetic messages. These poems are the much anticipated follow-up to the author's work contained in Heavenly Bodies, both published by Poets Wear Prada.Lapidary presents a wide variety of precious gems eager to tell their story. Each message is different. Each adds to the chorus of voices vying for the reader's undivided attention. The reader becomes acutely attuned to the mix of spiritual and commercial symbolisms. The poems are framed as individual puzzles within a maze. The writer's poems are thought provoking pieces within a self-contained mystery. This collection lays bear for the reader to enjoy a cornucopia of words, phases and images that magically charges those gemstones to "speak" to us. Throughout this collection the writer, as sculptor, removes those unnecessary words, phrases, and images to uncover the truth of the gemstones. In the poem Marble the writer rids the stone of what doesn't belong leaving its essential truth exposed. By chance or design his renderings struck me as spiritual musings that shape and fashion in a manner that brings life to the gems. For film noir buffs this selection is reminiscent of the movie "One Touch of Venus." In the piece Goshenite precious gemstones were appointed by God to adorn the ephod (apron) worn by Aaron, the first priest (Moses' brother). These pieces are a mixture of biblical, Greek and contemporary influences that will command the reader's attention. The delight in this book is that it continually pushes the reader forward in search of source material to explain a word or phrase. The author's work entertains as it educates. These poems are at the same time both elegant and profound. Collected in one book this work forms an array of messages that are cool, hip and direct. Additionally these pieces take the reader back in time historically. Some of those that offer up a modern touch connect directly to the funny bone. Imagine a stone as conversational sources and you'll gain some insight into what the writer wishes to convey. The writer is a talent whose choice of words help to create interlocking connections which allow the reader to delve deeper trying to unlock the enclosed message of the poem. If the reader likes searching out a poem's meaning then this book of mysteries is for you. On the other hand, if you simply wish to enjoy a good mixture of poetic plots then this collection is for you. Both the beginner and seasoned readers and poets will find enough unique poems to return to time and again to uncover missed clues that will reveal the message's underlying truth.Reading this collection is like reading a well written mystery novel - a page turner you don't want to end.Richard L.
