Women in Context with Feeling
Cooperative, compassionate, and generous; in these portraits, the women dialogue with the camera. Some manipulate the image. Others reveal. These are photos of visceral beauty, because of the individual consciousness of these women in their context: trapeze artists, politicians, writers, directors, poets, actors, dramatists, miners, hotel housekeepers, Las Vegas showgirls, judges, MD's, performance artists, waitresses, architects, soldiers, athletes, socialites, teachers, activists, gang members, journalists, musicians and scientists. Sontag's essay explores the why of a book of women, the how of beauty. She reminds us that in parts of the men controlled world, women are covered, not seen by the camera. These portraits are radical, expressions of women actively creating their images as they create their lives. Photos of 238 women with thumbnail biographies. Annie Leibovitz acknowledges this book was inspired by Susan Sontag.

Be Embraced, Know Thyself
The common belief of the emotional aspects of warm, nurturing, heart on their sleeves, empathetic, and more in reference to women are explored and shared. Celebrations of birth/death, tears/laughter, relaxing/struggling come breathing off the pages without apologies. Worldwide, cultural differences blend outwardly showing and touching the fact that the lines become obscured as the common alikeness of spiritual oneness can easily be seen in the photographs. The realization that borders do not define feelings are beautifully displayed and become authentic definitions of explanations of the unexplanable.

Beautiful, moving photos that tell a story
This was the first time I bought a book of photos and I was not disappointed. I was lucky enough to be part of a book signing event by Annie Leibovotz which makes this book even more special to me. Each photo tells a moving story of the person pictured and I find myself puliing this book out often just to remind myself who I am. Every woman can identify with at least one of the photos, if not all of them. I recommend this book to women everywhere as a reminder of who we are and how far we have come over the years.

Great portraiture
One of the best portrait studies I have seen. She has an underlying thread that ties all of these images together, stylistically, even though they are all vastly different. Fascinating book.

I bought this book for my xmas gift for my mom and she loves it! It's a great coffee table book and one you can look at over and over again. Some of the images are just breath-taking and really tell a story.
