Or is it just the probe?** A: I found out the hard the probe doesn’t even stay in the oven if you are going 400°F or higher! (The clock/display part always stays out of the oven). The handle part of the probe melted a little when used during broiling. Then that completed melted off and the wire covering got damaged in the grill. I have now checked the manual after the fact and it is only good up to 392°F. To me that’s a huge design flaw if the reason you are buying this is to use in ovens and such (grill was probably pushing my luck anyway). Do not get if you are using for high heat cooking methods! **Q: Do you put the timer outside of the oven and the probe in the turkey so that the cord is shut in the oven door?** A: It is designed to do EXACTLY that. The wire is thin and flexible enough not to interfere with the oven seal. Probe in the bird (thickest part of thigh), display can be magnetically stuck outside the oven somewhere or just on the counter. **Q: Will high temperatures damage the probe** A: Yes I can confirm that high temps damage the probe. Broiling started the probe handle melting and grilling finished the job leaving a pile of plastic stuck to my grill. The manual says something like 392°F maximum. **Q: Can I use this for making cheese? TY** A: I've used it quite successfully for cheese making for years. Also; to me the way the timer sounds off is very good. I can hear it well from the next room. It doesn't just make one beep, it continues as it counts down for 1 minute. I could miss just one beep but won't miss this one minute of sounding. It's been a great little tool that I've used everyday for for 5 or 6 years until my son dropped it in the soup yesterday. Today I'm ordering a new one. SEVERAL HOURS LATER, SAME DAY: **CORRECTION!** It's now working! I guess I hadn't given it enough time to dry out.
