Great steam
I've been using this brand for years and never failed me. Love the size, so I don't have to keep refilling.

Mom to child, Child to Mom, Mom to Child
The standard we had growing up had a larger bason more square. Maintenance is low. With my first child on the way I selected the new cool mist. Read the pamphlet on maintenance and regarded it; it was already there. I learned much through one machine. The calcium in the water adhered to the heating element that seemed like a mixture between metal and stone. The unit was unrecoverable. It stopped working and that was the results of expectation, the calcium particles in the water somehow rendered the heating element unable to continue.the problem with owning anything is having to tend to its nature, it's requirements.when child number two came along, i ordered the tide and true, the same style mom used for the least amount of maintenance and I followed the directions for it's maintenance; the difference of a few years and the death of a machine. I still prefer to use the rub instead of the liquid, the solid rub will melt down into liquid form and does the same thing without the deciation or the added expense, but if the liquid is inexpensive and the rub precious while money isn't, then the scale tips on purchasing bothif the father of my children or my child had that moment of being in the seat of decision for the future purchase, or even you dear sir or lady, may this review help you further in feeling confident in your decision on which style to purchase in humid vs mist. these machines last, likely mom's still works but unable to verify. they are also quiet and have a peaceful noise that bespeaks of wellness and being tended to.

The classic, simple, just-works hot steam humidifier like you had as a kid.
I love these old Vick's humidifiers. They are crazy simple and they just work - no fancy knobs, buttons, readouts or anything. I wanted a humidifier in our bedroom this winter for a stretch of very cold and dry weather and it fit the bill without costing a lot of money. As stated in some other reviews, my water required a little added table salt to get the steam going but only the first night - subsequent fill-ups did not require any salt. Also - we don't have mineral heavy water here so I did not get any of the spotting or mineral dust that some others complained about after using the unit. The only detractors for me (and what cost a star) are that 1) there is no on/off switch - you power it off and on by plugging and unplugging it. This is somewhat annoying but also put undue wear on the receptacle connectors. 2) the top could be easier to grip and lift out for refilling.. several times it slipped out of my grip while trying to align the little locking tabs in order to get the top out of the lower tub. Then, once you do have the top off, you have to watch the dripping from the wet unit. It's not hard to pull it out and hold it over the hole while refilling with a pitcher but it takes some patience and coordination (not something you want to deal with if you're sick).Otherwise, I've never had a humidifier that was 100% convenient to fill so it's par for the course.I'll definitely buy another one of these things when I need one.

Literal garbage. Zero stars.
Growing up in the 80s and 90s in a desert climate my mother always had her trusty Vick's steam humidifier rocking to make the house's air more pleasant. Every once in a while we'd dismantle it to remove the hard water deposits from the rods to get it back up to tip top shape. The second I moved out of mom's in the late 90s I bought my own and it was just as trustworthy. Ten years later I replaced it when it stopped working and that one was just as effective. But this latest version that I bought last fall is a joke. This is NOT the same humidifier Vicks used to sell. Where their previous product used to put out a solid stream of steam this PoS bubbles and gurgles to put out a pathetic amount of vapor. You HAVE to add salt if you want it to actually work anymore. When I went to clean the heating rods (which now needs to be done at least once a month where previously they only needed to be serviced twice a year), they're a different metal than what Vicks used to use. They're paper thin and black where they used to be thick with a tinge of coppery color. Just touching them while cleaning leaves your fingers blacker than a coal miner which NEVER happened with their previous humidifiers. Either my city completely changed our water right when I bought this, or Vicks is using the cheapest possible materials to make this. Which one is more likely? But even beyond it's pathetic performance and garbage Chinesium materials, they shortened the rods by what seems to be about 2 inches. This leaves the bottom of the rods WAY short of the bottom of the water reservoir. Where previously when the unit would turn off due to low water you were left with only an inch of water in the bottom of the tub. Now it turns off when the tub is half full.If you have one of their older humidifiers dismantle it and clean it. Don't make the same mistake I did and replace it. These new ones are literal garbage.
