It comes ready to go right out of the box. The LCD viewing screen is just great and clear. There are two different light sources, upper and lower. The only real complaint is with the "delux prepared slides" which I found to be of average quality and inadequate quantity. A microscope this nice should have had a lot more prepared slides than were in the box.
