The lid closes tight and easily opens with the press of a button but it also can lock to where the button won't open it until it's unlocked. These cups are very sturdy and when I say they don't leak whatsoever when the lid is closed, I mean not a drop. I am highly impressed with that since my kids love laying their cups around or bringing them to bed. Them being dishwasher safe is another big plus for me. I bought 3 and they are amazing.
