I purchased this alternator as preventative maintenance for my boats diesel. What a colossal mistake that turned out to be. Immediately upon installation a loud squeal developed, before I could shut the motor off to check out the problem, the motor ground to a halt. Checking the belt it was tight enough where it wouldn't make the noise, so I took the alternator off to see if there was a problem with it. It was immediately obvious that the bearing had frozen up, locked completely. Then the question became if any damage was done to the motor as a result of a completely failed part. I installed the old alternator, because nothing was wrong with it I just thought it was time for a new one and I had the time to do it, I got the motor started and it seemed ok, then I noticed a weird smell, and excessive black smoke, when I tried to power it up it would not go past a high idle, with even more black smoke and it was puking oil out the exhaust. This was a perfectly running motor before my little idea to do some preventative maintenance. I've done a dozen alternators in my time and never came close to having a problem like this. I even bought a couple off Amazon. I don't know if its the same seller, but the products were ok. So I call my mechanic down and he tells me the motor is toast, it may not even be worth rebuilding. The alternator freezing but all sorts of strain on internal parts and probably the main bearing gave out causing the piston rings to grind excessively on the cylinder walls due to the crankshaft being out of alignment. A piston rod might have bent, ect, ect, ect. long story short, motors aren't designed to be locked up by a defective part seizing a pully and darn near everything inside the motor can fail when it happens. I don't know where this goes with the company from here, I'm not even sure this review will post because the company that sold the part is a division of Amazon itself. I'm in the process of documenting everything, talking with my attorney to see if I have any recourse what so ever, and not looking forward to the nightmare of a process it is to replace the motor. I seriously doubt Amazon is just going to cough up the 10 grand or so it's going to take to fix the problem their defective part caused so I'm sure legal action is the only recourse. A web site warning people about the dangers of their cheap parts may also be in order if this review is censored off the amazon web site. Had to give a least a one start rating to even get this accepted. In reality it's negative 100+++++
