Excellent daytime image quality, middling dynamic range and requires some tinkering to get right

*by B***G on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 24, 2013*

I have purchased three of these devices and have them writing to a dedicated network hard drive, sending out email alerts based on motion detection during a schedule and remote access over SSL. This took a lot more work than I thought it would, however.Image quality, first: the sensor in this device captures daylight well PROVIDED you do not place this in a room that has different levels of light in the picture. I have one in my sunroom, and the light from outside causes people walking around inside to nearly be completely black in video unless a light is on. The camera also is very eager to swap to IR mode when there is plenty of light available; I wish it had the ability to configure the amount of light before it switches manually. As for night mode, the IR LEDs in this are not quite powerful enough to create enough light for these cameras in a pitch black environment. The camera becomes somewhat noisy, and can even trigger your motion detection excessively because of this. Thankfully, you can configure the shutter speed and 1/15 ameliorates this somewhat (but not entirely). Be sure to change your framerate to match the shutter speed or your videos will look strangely jerky (15fps if you use 1/15 shutter).Sound quality is adequate, though all three of my cameras have a staticy clicking noise to them.Setup was very straightforward, either use the provided CD and hardwire the device with the ethernet cable, or use the WPS button if your router has WPS available. The configuration is also not bad, provided you are somewhat technical. This device allows for writing to a SAMBA share, which is a great feature if you want more than 32gb of SD storage or want to hide the backups somewhere more secure. You can set it to automatically delete the oldest videos once you start running out of space, but I ran into an issue once where if a previous video file is locked (open somewhere or left locked) and it tries to delete it, it will simply lock up and fail to work until you go in and manually remove that file. Events are simple and straightforward, though I wish you could designate more than one time period for a schedule.Lastly, this device allows for remote viewing only if you forward the web address to a port on your router. Be aware that this device does NOT support SSL and most regular IP cameras don't, which means that anyone listening to your traffic could see your username and password in plain text and gain access to your device. Setting up SSL requires extensive knowledge and an always-on server, but is not necessary if you aren't putting this camera in a place you intend to keep private. Unfortunately, the java client on this device forces an attempt to access http instead of seeing what the scheme is, so you can't view the web stream over https. The mjpeg stream is still available though, which is what most mobile apps like tinycam use to connect to the camera. Since this is the way I view remotely anyways, I was okay with this tradeoff. All in all, it's a decent camera (especially for the price) that could do with some software fixes, some more IR LEDs and a slightly better sensor for capturing light. Just be prepared to work for it.

    New TV-IP572WI Play Toys

*by D***R on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 23, 2013*

The TV-IP572WI is a improvement over the TV-IP312WN. The higher resolution looks better but both cams have loose focus rings so the focus is not uniform from left to right at least on the ones I have (1 572 and 7 312's). The SD fills up fast at high resolution and 30fps, I filled a 16gig up in about 10 or so hours. Low light is much better than the 312, 422 and 121s I have. There seems to be a quirk in the Action setup for Recording & Video Clip in that a profile can be set but both have to be the same. I couldn't send a High Res 30fps clip to the SD and send a medium res 5fps clip e-mail or FTP. Another real plus is that a recording to the SD also has sound but so far the HiRes h264 AVI file is a little hard for the VLC to decode (my computer is fast enough on other HiRes clips). One more thing that is a big improvement over the 312's & 422's is the ability to download a file stored on the SD card from the camera with the camera browser both in IE and Firefox without removing it. With the install from the browser in Firefox when you run the TV-IP572WI the first time, you get from what I can tell the full features you could only get with IE and activeX. I was able to set the camera up without installing any of the software that came with the camera or reading any instructions (I've done 40 or 50 Trendnet's now though). All in all, I'd buy another one if the price stays the same or less.P.S.The SecureView Pro V2 sure is buggy (crash boom bang!!!).

Good hardware and specifications. Configuration is so/so.

*by A***3 on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 21, 2012*

This camera rocks in the specifications for cost department. Does 1280 x 800 (WXGA) video at 30 fps and has an easy setting for various profiles if you wish to step it down to a lower resolution to save drive space when recording. Image quality, zoom and even night vision are very good! The problem I have with it is the configuration settings. As with any IP camera, simply type the IP address in your browser to get the configuration page. Unfortunately you can only export the video to the built in SD card slot or a SAMBA network drive. Well how about a plain old Windows drive or NAS? I mean really? Yes it comes with other software where you can configure it to record to a Windows drive but it is way to bulky, cumbersome and buggy.UPDATE: Well I decided to use the included software, which is extremely powerful. Newbies will need to read the manual first to understand all of the configuration settings and wizards to set for it to work. I have two of these recording to a Windows NAS server on a business domain. I should also make note that I am using them without the power cords (POE-Power over ethernet). If you do not have a POE switch or router you can use a cheap POE injector such as the TP-Link TL-poe150s. This is another big benefit to this camera. Most places do not have a wall outlet nearby to plug the camera in and if you do, seeing the cord looks cheap and ugly. Highly recommended now, though still 4 out of 5 stars for not including better recordability functions in the firmware for users that do not need or want to use cumbersome software.
