The storyline is so good. Follow it up with the movie, Field of Dreams.

The movie was a treat....but this book is a topper.
Much more in depth than the movie. A great read. Will be passing it along to my granddaughter and grandson who watched the movie with me the night before we went to Dyersville to see the movie set. Anyone who has seen the film should definitely read this book.

The prose of summer...
I have read Shoeless Joe for the 3rd time. It is rare for me to reread something from my college days. The metaphors drip from the page like honey, and I long for the summers when the field behind my Ida Grove home grows corn adrift with Kinsella's spirits.

Fun with Baseball as only W.P. Kinsella can!
If you love baseball, W.P. Kinsella sure can weave a captivating story! Love "Field of Dreams" and knowing the book is always better, decided to read it. GREAT, FUN baseball story! The movie was fairly faithful to the intent of the story. The book was so much fun to savor! If you haven't read his other works, get after it!! Love the 'legendary' twists!

Just like the movie.
Before I bought this book, I read a review that stated it was nothing like the movie and much better. It's exactly like the movie and as I read it, I could visualize the actors reading the script. Read about half and decided to not waste my time.

Potential
As with Field of Dreams, which is based on this novel, this novel is centred around baseball but with themes of regret, hope, love and dreams it is about so much more than that.I felt that the opening was a little underwhelming, missing the opportunity to build mystery, suspense and magic. However you soon settle into the gentle pace and get carried on the books magical journey.Kinsella’s style of writing is beautifully descriptive, and his characters are endearing. There was just a little too much detail around baseball on occasions, that took away from his lyrical writing.I found the mood of the story to be quite flat, and was longing for it to break away from the consistently gentle pace to build some truly magical moments. There were a couple of opportunities in the story, where there could have been some wonderful climatic moments, that were unfortunately missed. My opinion is perhaps tainted, as my favourite bit of the film is the ending, but realised very early on in the book that it wouldn’t give me that ending, which was disappointing. It was a strike of genius to bring this addition to the screenplay. This, for me, is where the film has taken the book and improved on it, leaving a few of the underdeveloped characters behind, but building truly special moments that evoke more powerful emotions.A book with so much potential, it really does not surprise me that it inspired one of my favourite films.

The dream field
I heard a story of when Salinger was approached by the studios about turning the book into a film. They told him they felt a different title would be more suitable. They wanted to call it field of dreams. Salinger explained that the publisher insisted on calling it shoeless Joe. He’d wanted to call it the dream field. Spooky. As for the book. It’s brilliantly written and the film remained pretty true to the book so don’t expect any great revelations. Just enjoy.

I have always loved the Kevin Costner film and watch it whenever it is on TV, despite owning the DVD. I loved the book and I can only describe it as unputdownable. The film was so very much like the book I almost knew what was going to happen next. Apart from a name change of the abducted author it was the film. Usually I take the book and film as two separate entities as film moves away from the book (Under the Dome a classic example). First time I have bought a book on the strength of a film and I certainly love both. Another title to add to my top 20 titles.

Loved the film
I had to buy this book simply because "Field of Dreams" is one of my most favourite films. I've not had a chance to start it as yet but am definitely looking forward to doing so.
