Pretty Good
Pretty good but still has some errors throughout of teachings attributed to Joseph Smith Jr. that have poor sources. Joseph Smith is one of the most edited and watered down men of the 19th Century. His teachings were not received well by the Saints as he often lamented of how hard it was to teach anything outside of the bible. His April 1844 Conference Talk(King Follet Discourse) was on the identity of the Gods, plural. This was not received at all and resulted in many claiming he was a fallen prophet(William Law, 2nd Counselor for example). This also led to him condemning the Saints in his June 1844 Sermon in the Grove.Polygamy for example is thrust upon Joseph Smith but any serious undertaking into the history will prove this to be utterly false. Joseph Smith did not teach in private or practice Polygamy. This was a result of Brigham Young's experience with Spiritual Wifery on one of his missions. He and others immediately began practicing Polygamy at the moment of Joseph's murder and claimed he was the teacher(trying to give validity to that which is off limits according to Jacob within the BofM).If my memory serves me correctly and which any of you can validate;D&C 132 for example declares Polygamy is fine and that Emma was in trouble for not supporting Joseph. This is literally written in the handwriting of Brigham Young.D&C 20; which gives the offices in the church(apparently a corporation now) was written by Oliver.D&C 1; often quoted to say the church is the only living and true church... was given in 1830(before the condemnation of the whole church in D&C 84), in the home of David Whitmore, speaking of the Church of Christ, which Joseph separated from.Boy, it is important to know who wrote what and when. Joseph is shrouded in falsehood that has been heaped upon him by those who should have been his friends. Time to think critically my friends. Check those sources. Check the sources, sources.

Amazing
I got this book as a gift from my parents 22 years ago and it has been the best birthday gift anyone ever gave me, period. If you are looking for a summary of LDS doctrine, this is not the right book. It was compiled for an audience that was presumed to already be quite familiar with the Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price and Doctrine and Covenants in their entirety. If that isn't you, then this is the wrong book for you. However, if you are familiar with those this book is astonishing in its sheer doctrinal power. I like to use the phrase "post card doctrine" for scriptural insights that typically serve as the basis for a sunday school lesson. We enjoy them when we hear them (who objects to getting a post card?), but they are forgotten almost as soon as they are received and neither the student nor the teacher is apt to remember them two weeks later. They are the light snack of the gospel banquet. This book is the Thanksgiving feast of the gospel banquet. You can read it as many times as you like and you still won't get everything there is to learn from it. Joseph Smith is a prophet of God and the depth, breadth and sheer power of the doctrine in this book is astonishing. I wish I had even a small fraction of Joseph Smith's knowledge of the gospel.

Great reference
Instead of believing rumors and innuendos about the man why not read his actual teachings. This is a great resource for studying what the man taught and believed

His life in his words
I reference this all the time. having it in Kindle is very convenient. He wasn't know for is oratory mastery, but when he did speak it was important. It's also interesting to see his structure, grammar and presentation improve over time. Even more interesting is observing his doctrine is fuller over time as he learned more without contradicting what he previously preached. He learned a little at a time and in bursts and while the teachings at the end were fully formed, you can see how revelation trained him over time to move from the simple and incrementally different doctrine to the complete and very different stuff from the rest of the world, all while having that string of consistency. You can see how he was learning from God and experience just like we we do: as we're ready.

Words of a Prophet
This book is not for someone with a casual interest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Nor is it for a new convert to the Church. It is not always an easy read, as the writing is by Joseph Smith (1805-1844), and so is in the wordy style of the 1830s and 1840s. Smith's style is also plain and simple--it is neither great nor poor writing--just matter-of-fact. Some of the passages included are rather mundane--such as, have this Brother start a newspaper, and have that Brother go on a mission. But to a seasoned member of the Church, there are some true gems in revelations and Church Doctrine that make the book worthwhile.

... one will think much of this unless they are like me. I believe Joseph Smith was a Prophet ...
No one will think much of this unless they are like me. I believe Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God, equal to Moses, Elijah, Isaiah etc. The communication from heaven has not stopped. If God is fair then we need prophets today more than any other time in the History of the World. Joseph Smith Jr was that Prophet. The Prophet of the restoration. The things he said and wrote in this book should be read as though God said them Himself.

The little things that give greater understanding of the Gospel.
I love this book because it is a collection of different things the Joseph Smith, Jr. taught & said. It is not full of lengthy sermons usually, but is full of his quotes. It helped me understand more how the Lord feels about animals, healing, the Spirit world, the Savior, etc. Joseph Smith had so much knowledge about the spiritual realm. With the index, you can find pieces of wisdom & knowledge on many subjects from this great prohpet. I use this book when I can't seem to glean the answers I need from the scriptures or more recent prophets. It has brought me great comfort & peace whenever I've studied his teachings. It was compiled by Joseph F. Smith.
