The Best
I have loved this series for many years. I read the series when it first came out when I was in high-school back in the 80s. RA Salvatore is a very good writer and I recommend all of his books to anyone that enjoys getting away from the real world for a while. Definitely an awesome character, Drizzt has always been my favorite. Great book!

Captivating origins for one of fantasy's most revered characters
I very much enjoyed this first entry in the saga of Drizzt Do'Urden. The expertly intricate and vile portrayals of Drow culture and religion encapsulate the lore and world-building in a persistently oppressive and sinister shroud, making Drizzt's journey towards segregating himself from it all the more poignant. The moral and ethical quandaries he faces therein are well conveyed, and the overall story operates well on its own, individual merits as well as being a very engaging start to a 30+ book saga. I look forward to more.

revisited 13 years later, and still just as good and exciting!
I picked up this book again after finishing the last book in the series -the way of the drow. I wanted to relive all the excitement and fascination I had when I first picked up this book and first read about drizzt do’urden. It didn’t disappoint! I will continue the adventure, and reread the entire series, loving every new moment and memory it affords, remembering past events, and learning new things about the characters I’ve grown up with and have come to love.

Loved it as a child, still love it now!
It's been over 20 years since I last read Homeland & it has lost none of It's edge. Fond memories return as I read accompanied by new, wiser, understanding of every line. Even without nostalgia, I would wager it is a worthy read. Intrigue, action, & more lurk after every page with a good pacing that would suredly satiate a reader's appetite. I've not read anything of R.A. Salvatore's for over two decades & yet I still find myself ensared, reading an almost forgotten yet familiar tale with an interest not often found in the many books I've read.

Good book
I have never played Dungeons and Dragons, nor have I read any books by RA Salvatore, but this book is excellently written. I loved the prevailing themes of loss of innocence, of intrigue and assassination. The classic story of a child lost in rebellion against his parents and society as a whole gets a fantastic twist with the tale of Drizzt and how Salvatore unfolds the functionality of the drow society. It starts off with the day that Drizzt is born, a day of momentous occasions. Not only does it illustrate the values of the drow society, but it shows the interactions of the drow high society and how they play their game of great houses. Family night raids where there can be no survivors is key to rising in society, and this very power move is executed by Drizzt's family, the house of Do'Urden, against the rival house that was placed in disfavor by the evil goddess, Lolth, that the entire society revolves around. As Drizzt is born, he is supposed to be sacrificed to Lolth, but instead his older brother knifes the oldest brother in the back, saving Drizzt from performing the ritual sacrifice of the third son to Lolth. Instead Drizzt is raised inside his family's compound by his older sister and later trained by his (at the time unknown) father, Zaknafien. The rest of the book is spent focused on Drizzt, and his differing values from the rest of society, and how he fits into the dynamic. Whether it is at school or in his patrol squadron. The deciding moments for Drizzt to turn his back on his family and Lolth was when he witnesses the horrifying graduation ritual and when he participates in a surface raid on elves. He ends up saving a child and reconciles himself that he at least saved an innocent life. A key relationship is between Drizzt and Zaknafien as one learns more about the other's character, and eventually each is led to believe that the other has conformed to drow society, which leads to a duel and they end up admitting their grievances about their family, only for ....(spoilers) not going to spoil the ending. It is a great book. Also find out about the awesome spirit panther. GO READ THIS BOOK.

I first read this book many years ago when I was in high school, now iver twenty years later, I've read it again, and it has brought me the same sense of excitement and wonder that it did back then. Any fan of dungeons and dragons or fantasy in general should read this book.

Exceptional
First book of The Legend Of Drizzt. A truly defining work about anything dark elf. R.A. Salvatore really has gotten around all the cult and psychology at play. A genius plot to introduce Drizzt as a character. The writer follows an easy to follow focused and fast style using multiple character perspectives on the plot. He leaves up most things to the readers own imagination. To close the gaps. That works nicely for a totally strange and complex world anda perverted elven race. Unfortunately a dark world without lights is unlikely to ever appear on cinema screens. Absolutely stunning storyline intro.

great book and great entry to the drizzt series
I love the struggle of Drizzt. Through his eyes I learned a lot about the underdark. Very nice you, as a reader you get understanding of both the drow perspective and the human moral perspective. Great thing about fantasy, you learn a lot about the real world. How can all be influenced and how hard it is to escape from it. Books that make you think about your own descisions are the best in my humble opinion.
