The Collected Stories (Everyman's Library CLASSICS)

The best edition I've found
I wanted to buy all (or most) of Hemingway's short stories. After much research and perusing, I discovered this edition, which is the best. It's Everyman Library, so the paper and binding are good. And the stories are ground and arranged in order of publication, which I like. The introduction, bibliography, and chronology are also particularly good, even for Everyman. The sections are also interspersed with facsimile reproductions of the covers of the first editions of the original publications. If you are a completest, this book doesn't contain every short story he ever wrote, for that you should turn to The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway: The Finca Vigia Edition. However, I believe that this Everyman edition has everything by Hemingway that you should want to read. The selections are skillfully made and, in my opinion, nothing of worth was left out here. The Finca Vigia Edition is also paperback. If you want all of Hemingway's *good* short stories in a quality edition, with excellent supplemental material, this is for you.

Disappointed in Hemingway's stories
Disappointed in Hemingway's stories. They just didn't hold my attention. Mostly cardboard characters, stories that end ho-hum, so what. Many stories about bull fights, effects of war on men. Not much depth to either the characters or the stories. I'd read a couple, feeling dissatisfied, then pick up Somerset Maugham's complete short stories--East and West. What a difference! Maugham writes stories that are like a wonderful five course dinner with champagne, wine, and brandy. Most of the stories are about life in the British colonies in Asia and, as such, give one a very good idea of what life was like for the Brits. Highly recommend Maugham for his command of the English language and story constructs, with a classic sense of how a story should evolve with a sound beginning, a steady middle, and a strong ending, usually with a twist. Eminently readable.

Not necessarily for everyone
You know what? I like short stories but I've had trouble "getting into" Hemingway's style and subject matter. I don't doubt that Hemingway deserves the acclaim he's received as a "classics" author. The point of this review is that not everyone will necessarily be able to enjoy his fiction right off the bat.I will, however, keep this volume on hand. At some future time I might find myself in a space where I can better appreciate Hemingway's writing.

My first ever exposure to Hemingway. Now I get why generations of readers and writers are in awe of him.

Fine collection
Contains all of the major stories, presented in a logical and chronological fashion, within a solid hardcover edition. Hemingway was the best short story writer of his generation and this is the collection to won.

There's a reason he's a classic!
Clever, clever turns of phrase. Hemingway has a way of creating quite a bit of thought in very few pages.

I just dont get it
maybe it's me, but I just dont get hemingway, and lord knows I've tried. this collection reads like holiday postcards written by a 12-year-old. I can only think his larger-than-life reputation carried him through and got his stuff published cos people were frightened of him, or he took them out on his boat and either got them drunk & laid or threatened to kill them.read it, if you're a fan of clumsy hyperbole, but for my two penn'orth you'll find more depth & substance in the list of ingredients on the side of a cereal box. sorry papa, it's a 'no' from me.

Great stories and a good way to introduce yourself to Hemingway.
Brought this as a present for my husband and he has really enjoyed it. He takes it with him when he's only got time for a quick read.

nice edition
This is the first time I read Hemingway. This edition of all his short stories seems quite complete, and accompanied with a very good introduction that explains the layout of the book.I would recommend this book to all those that, like me, are interested in having a good experience reading an American classic.
