This book is rocket fuel for legacy giving programs!
I just finished reading ‘You Can’t Take it With You’ and wanted to write to you to say Thank you Thank you Thank you for making my job so much easier and clearer. As a fundraiser whose main job over the past 6 years here at Inter Pares has been to manage our major gifts fundraising, foundation grantseeking, legacy giving, and a boatload of other duties, I have been yearning for the day when I can collect my thoughts and start to put together a plan for a legacy marketing strategy. I’ve really enjoyed having some ideas and suggestions from Fraser Green in the past, and I love the work that you folks at Good Works do.We came to a point in staff conversations about fundraising, at a recent staff retreat 3 months ago, when all staff affirmed that for our fundraising program, legacy giving is something that we want to devote time, resources, and top priority status to. I finally feel like I have the team buy-in to devote time to mapping out a strategy, and the commitment from the team that when we present our legacy marketing ideas for staff affirmation, they will be met with enthusiasm and green lights. As I’ve been reading your excellent new book over the past two weeks, it has inspired me to take notes and build out a now 8-pages-and-counting document on our legacy marketing strategy that currently contains:· Strategy· Goal· Guiding principles· 4 segments of target audiences, and the anticipated volume of marketing for each segment· A draft timeline of when to send and what type of content to send· Key messages, concepts, words to use when writing about gifts in wills· An analysis of our existing bequesters in terms of date of first gift, total lifetime giving, largest gift, and total number of gifts· A list of bequesters whose testimonials we have shared in print and online during the past 2 decades· A list of suggested 30 bequesters we could reach out to to start a conversation that could lead to a testimonial, with a prioritized top 12 to reach out to first· A short list of changes we can make to the legacy section of our website· Thoughts to consider if we want to put together a brief gifts in wills brochureIt’s still early stages in bringing this strategy to life, but I feel honestly light years ahead of where I’ve been for the past 6 years, and that is 90% thanks to reading your book. Thanks Holly Fraser and Charlotte for the great work you do.
