Book is out of date---prepares you for sections of test that no longer exist
Book is out of date. IMPORTANT: the Biographic Information Questionnaire (third section) of the FSOT was removed in October 2017 and replaced with a Situational Judgement section. This book has NOT been updated to reflect that. It is accurate for the first 2 sections of the FSOT, however.

Misleading
So this is the Department of State’s most recommended studying resource, though it doesn’t fully explain what you should expect in the actual FSOT exam. There are actually 3 parts to the multiple choice section (grammar, job knowledge, and situational judgement) as well as an essay. I’m sure the tests change all of the time and this book is going on three years old, but I don’t think it’s necessary. I’d say that this is a good place to start, but if money is tight, I’d just take the free practice exams on the DoS’s website and research the situational judgement on my own. It’s still not a bad resource, though.

The most useful section, in my opinion
Average study guide. It is a quick read, and the pretest and practice test contain questions that you can find on the DOS app or several practice FSOT websites. The most useful section, in my opinion, is the information regarding the biographical portion of the FSOT. I haven't been able to find a similar section elsewhere, and while we cannot evaluate the answers, the author presents it as a good opportunity to reflect on your personal and professional pursuits and successes - identifying areas in which you can strengthen in the process.Overall, it is just an average study guide that is worth the small price for the Kindle version.

I was very disappointed. First of all
I bought the Kindle edition, and to say the least, I was very disappointed.First of all, the multiple choice questions are numbered, but the answer key is in letter format. Secondly, there are quite a few inconsistencies in many of the questions - some are subjective, and others are just flat-out incorrect.I wouldn't recommend this.

Useful because of the pre-practice test and the practice test
Useful because of the pre-practice test and the practice test, but it has a few errors. Example: it'll ask what the Truman Doctrine was and the correct answer is that it was meant to stop communist advances in the world, but the book has the wrong letter in the multiple choice answer key. Additionally, it claims there are 75 questions for the Biographical Information section, but I see the numbers skip questions 64 to 74. There are 65 questions when the test is supposed to have 75. It goes 1, 2, 3...64,73,74,75.

Some useful info but out of date!
The guide is good for getting practice tests for job knowledge section and suggestions on quick study resources. However, it needs some serious updates. The English usage questions do not really represent the type on the test. And the biographical questions have been replaced by a whole new section.

Best prep guide for the FSOT
Great prep guide for the FSOT. Helpful resources included. Practice test materials based on recent, real exam.

... harder than the actual test but It does a good job of preparing you
The practice tests were harder than the actual test but It does a good job of preparing you. I am giving it a 4 star because the format of the test has changed a bit since this was made. However, this is a great guide to prepare you for not only what to expect during the initial test but also in the other tests and during employment.
