Helpful Tool for Communication
I did not read or study any other NVC materials before purchasing this book but I still found it to be a very valuable and helpful read. I loved that this book was set up more like a script as it allowed me to clearly see how to use this practice in my conversations and gave me a "play book" to follow. I used this book to reframe multiple conversations with coworkers, loved ones, and friends and really learned a lot about how the way I was communicating lacked clarity and was more emotionally charged than I realized or intended. Very interesting and fun tool to have in your back pocket. Short enough to read in one sitting and is a tool I have returned to multiple times since to "practice" and role play real life convos. If you find communication styles interesting in general, you will enjoy learning about this perspective in this bite sized format.

Being me, loving you
One of the most inspiring book I have read so far and I am a big self help book reader. I recommend this book to every single human beeing as this is something we should all practice. It is a short book, easy to read and you cant wait to turn the page and say..wow,thats sounds pretty easy to do! I believed to be effective in communicating and had a pretty good approach, I just didnt know how to handle when the other person did not respond in positive way. This book taught me how to put on my NVC EARS (non violent communicative ears) so I can go behind and beyond the words I am hearing and bring the conversation to where I want it to be in a non-manipulative way meaning, it shows you how to hear what the other person is saying without hearing the critisism or other undisired words that may hurt us and turn the conversation into a constructive one leaving both feeling heard and understood. Being Me, Loving You
Being that this was not a novel, I cannot really use my normal star rating system that I borrowed from my friend. I grew up with the NVC (nonviolent communication) process. My mother and grandmother were both very interested in this, I however had never read any of the books or gone to any of the meeting/workshops for this. This book was the second one I've read. My sister read the book 'Speak Peace in a World of Conflict' for a school assignment, and she had enjoyed the book immensely. She began applying the techniques of communication that she learned from the book when she was baby sitting our nephew, who was 18 months at the time. This brought an interest for me to read Rosenberg's books. I read "Getting Past the Pain Between Us" first, hoping it would help with the process of grieving, since I've lost my father 4 months ago. It did not. But it was still interesting enough to bring me to this book. I thought this book would be suitable for a couple to read together. I would recommend it. The book was, to me, structured like a workbook, that a couple could, together, work through. The information in the book, would be very helpful for couples that are looking for a way to communicate and understand each other in a nonjudgemental and appropriate way. to lean how to be assertive when there are differences between the couple and how those differences might be resolved.

Being me, loving this book!
This is a great tool for authentic, loving relationships. This book was my introduction to NVC and it did a fantastic job of laying the groundwork for me. With multiple mid-length dialogue transcriptions bounded by very brief context setting, it matched my reading/learning style really well. People who should find a different book: Those easily angered by gender assumptions/generalizations. (If you are a skilled social-justice-warrior who can read past generalizations with a roll of the eyes, then by all means, buy this book. It's amazing!) Those irritated by books that have short chapters with little academic reflection outside of dialogue. NVC is a useful, if sometimes tricky to master, tool. And this book was a fantastic introduction for someone who already speaks "relationships" really well.

easy concepts to understand and use
Practical for every situation, easy concepts to understand and use. When another's needs are recognized and acknowledged first it takes the fight out of a situation. Empathy, a word worth knowing, let it be a part of your daily life and watch as situations change before your eyes. More than met my expectations.

Supplemental read
This is a booklet (60ish pages) and a nice supplement to the original book/material. If you are BRAND NEW to NVC, this is not going to give you all you need to know, and may leave you confused. It's a transcript from a workshop he did, so it's a back-and-forth dialogue between him and audience members asking questions. I'm still quite new to NVC myself, however i did glean a few gems from this read- things i can try to apply immediately. AND overall, NVC is just... beautiful. It can help you to actually, truly love and accept yourself just as you are, and that's going to naturally extend out to others, making life easier, more enjoyable, and fulfilling. Life is good! Blessings to you on your journey!

Gut

Fantastic Marshall on relationships
I started following Marshall's work a couple of months ago and it really changed me for the better. First book I've read was of course the basic one about NVC, this was the second one. It's short but very informative. For those who watch tons of videos with Marshall on YouTube, they might find it as a script from his content. I would recommend his work and this book to anyone, despite if they are currently in a relationship or not because it teaches you how to improve any of your relationships with people around and prepares to become a better partner.
