Health Benefits + Technique + Recipes
I wasn't sure what a whole book on broth with 325 pages consisted of but I took a gamble. I'd learned to make broth from my mother and my grandmother but used it more as a stock for soup bases and in other cooking. I am a cookbook collector and let this sit for a year before feeling motivated to read and use it. I waited until I realized broth could help me heal my leaky gut which has not self-resolved after almost three full years of living avoiding foods I am now intolerant to (gluten being just one of them). I have felt great since going Paleo earlier this year and wanted to take further steps now that I'd received more testing that showed severe damage in my gut lining, severe inflammation, an imbalance of my microbiome. If something as simple as eating bone broth daily can help me heal it's cheap and easy and I'll give it a try.Part I is 48 pages teaching us what is in bone broth and why and how it helps the human body. This is more than I wanted to know, I am glad it is here but I was in the mood to just dive in.Part II is about 80 pages and goes into detail by health condition explaining how drinking (eating) bone broth on a daily or very regular basis can heal each condition: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, psoriasis, wound healing, infectious disease, digestive disorders, cancer, mental health and how it can help "sports and fitness" and anti-aging. By skimming parts that are relevant to me I started to feel like bone broth can cure everything and that anyone not drinking it daily is a fool. That's not the attitude of the author but the book makes you think that bone broth is a miracle and the elixir of life. I was more excited than ever to start drinking it daily.Part III is 150 pages of recipes from home cooks as shared via online discussion groups. The basic technique is chapter 20 and is 12 pages long. There are 34 pages of stocks and broths, followed by meals, appetizers, soups, sauces, grain and legume dishes, broths for breakfast and tonics. The 25 pages of notes cites references for studies, research and medical claims made in the book. This is good for the naysayers or doubters. As with other books about special diets or ways of eating (ie anti-inflammation diet, diets that avoid a certain common food group, Paleo) this book is not just recipes but explains why eating this and eating this way on a regular basis is good for the body for wellness or to heal the body. Do you want all this info? Some people do and some do not. As with other cookbooks one could say, "I could dig for recipes free on the Internet so why buy a cookbook?" Yes it is true, you can find recipes online but if you are a cookbook user and buyer you already know you'd rather have a convenient source of tested and tried recipes at your fingertips instead of gambling on Internet recipes which range from poor to excellent (you don't know until you've tried them). Will you want to make every single recipe? Probably not but isn't that the case with every cookbook you ever used? This is a great resource for those who want the health info and want recipes right on their own bookshelf. The paper is almost like newspaper and on the first reading some of my pages ripped, I wish all cookbooks had thicker paper of high quality. Still I am rating this on the words and recipes so I rate it 5 stars = I Love It. I have already put the techniques to use and the major change from the ways taught to me by my mother and grandmother is to add in chicken feet, pork feet and/or beef feet into the broths to boost the collagen and other nutritious qualities. The technique in the book really works (I use stovetop cooking).

Why collagen is important --
I started adding collagen to coffee when I started the Bulletproof diet. I month or two later I suddenly discovered that my painful, frozen shoulder had suddenly regained about 75% function and had lost almost all the pain. After thinking it through, I guessed that it had been the collagen that made the difference. So I read on. At first I resisted buying this book, but when it hit me that the reason I had suffered so many years of pain and lost shoulder and arm use was because modern life has cut out almost all dietary sources of collagen, which is the building block for joint fluid in our bodies. We cook too fast. When I was a kid we cooked soup after eating a chicken or turkey and we cooked bones into all kinds of dishes like soup and stew and oxtails. Now few of us do it. This book is a huge help in restoring these essential nutrients in a delicious, slow food manner. I love this book. I bought a second pressure cooker just for the purpose of always being able to make bone broth. I found an organic farm nearby to buy the bones because supermarkets don't sell anything with bones. And I feel better and better at age 65 --and look great, too. Collagen is the stuff they put in many expensive facial creams and treatments. You can make yourself more beautiful just by eating old fashioned bone broth - on its own, or as the basis of these absolutely delicious recipes. I have to say that my son thinks my ultra slow food kitchen with slow slow slow broth and slow slow slow sprouted grain bread is very antiquated and funny. But these are skills essential to health and should be restored in every kitchen. I feel better. So let him laugh at me.

Best book investment ever!!!
After following her instructions to the letter, I have lots of gelatin aka collagen!!! Right now I'm at 12 of the 24 hours of cook time and my bone brooth is clear, no scum to scoop out. No scum means the bones contain NO antibiotics or pesticides; another excellent purchase choice. They won't be done until around 8pm tonight. Because of the collagen it will take several hours to cool, then we'll strain it off and I'll store what we dont drink in mason jars. The "how and why" are explained beautifully in this book. I bought the paper back for my library and the Kindle version to share with others on the go. Definitely one of the best "book investments" I've made to date!#HomeMadeMedicine #TheAncestorsKnew

I healed my IBS/Leaky GUT symptoms within two weeks
I have had IBS leaky Gut symptoms just about my whole life. I am in my 50s, I have despaired for years being told by doctors i had to live with it as nothing could be done. Stomach Pain, Cramps, Bloating, Eczema swollen inside my ears. Well in this book i read about the effect of Amino Acids on the gut lining, Amino acids found in broth and gelatine, So I have been eating broth three times a day for nearly Two weeks. I also bought some L Glutamine which is one of the most beneficial Aminos and Bovine Gelatin to supplement with and it works my gut symptoms, my ears have practically healed within Two Weeks!!!!! Like a doctor mentioned in this book says "Any food can be eaten without affecting the body if Gelatin is taken with it" I now add gelatin to everything I can, in my coffee, on my scrambled eggs. If it can dissolve in whatever food Im eating Im adding it. Its Amazing. THANK YOU FOR THIS BOOK.

Good content, but overpriced poor quality paperback
Whilst I think the content of these books and the series is great, it's a lot of money for what is basically a flimsy paperback. It's not the best quality at all yet we are being charged hardback prices. I've only given 3 stars because of it. The Kindle version is a fraction of the price if you just want the knowledge

If you seek ancestral wisdom, love natural history, and value your health then this book is for you
I love ancestral wisdom and this book is chock-full of interesting historical investigation and information from people who witnessed ancient practices from antiquity, and more recent history. For me, it is not one to binge read on, as it is slightly repetitive by nature, but I do love returning to it from time to time to continue my quest for knowledge and optimal health.I am a massive fan of Sally Fallon Morell's work and this book represents a more in-depth look into the benefits specifically of broth for our health and well-being, written in a very engaging, intelligent style. It expands upon the work already presented in "Nourishing traditions' nicely and explains things in more detail.Well worth the few bucks it costs to download!!

A Must Have Kitchen Helper
Soups & Broths are made in most cultures. I can remember as a child visiting friends and being offered a bowl of soup. Which I loved & my friends of different nations coming to us & enjoying my mums Saturday soup in the winter. This book has a wonderful collection of soup stocks broths, from around the world which would be a blessing for any kitchen shelf. Just remember to take it down every now & then & use it.

Loved this book!
I was delighted with this book as the first two thirds are SO informative and a really interesting and easy read.It explains why it would be beneficial to eat some of the broths and how they help repair the body. The final third suggests many recipes to try which enable you to follow through with the regime.Highly reccommended if you want to learn more about how your body works, why its not feeling as good as it used to and how to begin to make changes for a more positive state of health.
