Review: Great workout that adjusts to your capabilities - I have been using Nike+ Kinect Training for over 4 months now and it has helped me build endurance and muscle, burn calories and get me in better shape. The program constantly measures you to let you know how you're doing, and does an assessment at the beginning of each 4-week program to assess your progress overall. The assessment is called a "fuel-print" and gives you a measure or your athleticism and your fitness level, and uses those measures to compare you to others in your age group as well as the trainers. Your fuel-print will (hopefully) improve with each 4 week assessment. Based on my needs, I have 3 sessions a week: 2 cardio and 1 strength. I'll usually add in an extra session a week for weight training (some exercises use 2 dumb bells), and have also added on the upper body+core and lower body+ core add on packs (can be purchsed with 400 Xbox points each). I try to get in about 5 sessions a week total, the add-ons are usually 15-30 minutes each, and the regular trainings sessions I am currently at 45 minutes/session for cardio and about 30 minutes for strength. The Nike+ web site also does a good job of tracking your achievements and history. I like that the program pushes improvements incrementally and tailors your workouts to your progress. When I started, the program was set for 6-7 20-30 second exercises (e.g., high-knees run in place) and after 4 months I'm now up to 60 second exercises with about 12 exercises done in 2 sessions (with a 2 minute "rest" period in between). As a person who, on my own, would probably not invest a lot of time in warm-up or cool-down, this program ensures that I am exercising with a great plan and does not push me far beyond my abilities. The first week or so, I was sore (had not been in an exercise program before) but that quickly dissipated. I also like that the program does a pretty good job of telling me if I am doing the exercises correctly and coaches me on how to improve. Some issues with the program: There tends to be a lot of focus on lower-body bouncing type of exercises. Hops (on both or one leg) are common in the warmups. The tracking with the Kinect can sometimes be off and may not credit me with my movements; it takes some time to get around the quirks of the system. The program needs a lot of room to take advantage of it. I'd give it 9-12 feet from the Kinect to be optimal and about 4 feet right and left. A recent update has caused the program to freeze for a few seconds at the beginning of some drills. A recent update has caused the program not to recognize me and I need to sign in each time. I wish there was some way to tell the program to substitute one exercise with another - for example, I have a bone spur in an ankle and the one-footed hopping can sometimes be painful. Overall, I am very happy with the program and have kept up with it, and plan on continuing with it.
Review: Great Kinect-based workout program - This is a fun and effective workout program which makes good use of Kinect motion-sensing technology. Be aware that it is not a "game" at all - just an animated personal trainer who walks you through a customized workout. However, there are several features that provide good psychological incentives to push yourself and workout often, which may help those who struggle to find motivation with a classic home workout dvd. I like a lot of the features: - I was pleased and surprised at the large variety of exercises. The workouts are different every time, which keeps things fun and targets all muscle groups. Most are classic exercises like squats, lunges, burpees, push-ups, jumping jacks, etc., but there are many different variations on these which are fun to learn and do. - the cardio workouts are quite intense. I workout a fair amount and these really get my heart rate up. Tough interval training seems to be very effective. - I like the fitness tests, and it's neat how the difficulty level of the program is automatically adjusted so it's tailored to your fitness level. This also allows the program to grow and change as you do - it's something you won't outgrow. - excellent motion tracking - you can see a cool looking, very realistic hologram of yourself as you do the workout, and the game is generally very good at counting reps and recognizing what you are doing. Gives fairly subtle and accurate feedback on form (such as keep chest up, knees higher, etc.). - you choose a schedule (3 workouts per week, for example), then it shows you a calendar with your workout history each time you turn on the game. This motivates me to not miss a workout - don't want to see a hole on that calendar. - you redo the fitness tests every four weeks, and can track your improvements over time, which I also find motivating. Some things I don't like: - for some reason my Kinect sensor cannot see my entire body - depending on how it's angled, either my head or my feet are out of range (no matter how close or far I am from the sensor too). On some moves this causes the tracking to read wrong, because it can't see my feet. - the default workout is quite short - 20-25 minutes. You do have the option to add more circuits to the routine to lengthen it, and it seems that you really need to add at least 2 to get in a decent-length workout. Personally I find repeating the same exercises over and over boring - I wish there was a way to choose the workout length you wanted, and have longer workouts contain more different exercises. Sometimes I just end up doing the default 20 minute workout, then doing something else afterwards. - the trainer inevitably says something like "almost done, just a few more reps!" right AFTER the clock has already ticked down to 00:00 and the bell has rung to indicate that you're done. Not a big deal, just gets annoying that the timing of this cue is clearly off. - also somewhat annoying is the fact that if you make a mistake on an exercise just once (maybe you got distracted, or maybe the motion sensor was off for some reason), the game remembers and each and every time you do it again, it reminds you: "you've had some trouble with this one in the past, haven't you? So let's really work on it today..." I realize that they're trying to motivate you, but the constant repetition just gets irritating, especially when it's an exercise you don't actually have a problem with. - the animated versions of the personal trainers are creepy - should have made them either more cartoonish, or more realistic. Uncanny valley. - personally I don't like the aesthetics of the backgrounds - they're going for a "gritty, urban" feel I guess with lots of gray concrete and busy city streets - I would have preferred something beautiful, relaxing, and inspiring. The problems are really minor quibbles - overall I like this workout program a lot and would recommend it to people of various fitness levels.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: People keep saying 'needs a lot of space'. What would the estimate be (distance from tv and space to move estimate)**
A: I would say you need at least 6 ft between you and TV, 10 ft on your side (5 each) and 4-6 ft behind you.

**Q: how long is a typical work out routine?**
A: It can vary based on the initial fitness assessment and the specific workout, but generally 20 working minutes and 30 minutes including rest times. There are workouts you can choose a la carte which tells you how long it will take.

**Q: This game works with xbox one?**
A: No, this is only for xbox 360.

**Q: Can I use this with Xbox One?**
A: No, I made the mistake of buying this and can not use it on my xbox one.

### ⭐⭐⭐ Probably best for a begining younger person who prefers home to gym
*by J***R on January 8, 2013*

I love Kinect exercise "games". I do all my exercise at home with the help of a good treadmill with incline, a good heart rate monitor, and various movement tracking games for the muscles and variety part of my weight loss routine (mostly Kinect, some PS3) The Kinect user interface is similar to the Dance Central games with skinny little side menu entries that you have to steady your hand over carefully and then swipe sideways. I found this to be too small of a target compared to Your Shape. Also I thought there was too many selections to get through on a fresh day rather than jumping straight into your program already in progress. It's better quality than The Biggest Loser game (I got rid of that game, partly because the controls were too difficult to select). The worst control item was the one I use/need the most - Resume, in the lower left corner. I have to wave my arms around and wait an eternal 3-5 second before my hand successfully can select Resume. Besides the too small controls, the next thing I hated was the jarring movements. This isn't going to work for me. I'll continue doing my modified, softened jumps and try to get used to hearing "you can do better" I don't like that you can't skip the warm up, since I use games like this in combination with the treadmill. At least the warm ups are fairly intense and technical. It does let me bail out of the cool down but I don't know what that does for completing the program. I didn't like that it didn't let me exercise on the first day after the assessment test. I wanted to start my program that same day. I didn't like that it forces you to chose between get strong, get toned/sculpted (body resistance only), or fat burn only. I would like a blend of these 3 things throughout the week, maybe even within one workout. I tried the get toned middle one but right away it had way too many jumpy jarring movements that made me hate the game so much I would stop exercising if this was all I had. I switched to get strong, but it wanted a cardio day from me right off. argh. The game tracking is very good. I think the movement tracking is as good as Your Shape 2012, but the control tracking is more difficult to use than I'd like. The exercise content seems very good so far, but much more ideal for someone who can withstand jumping, jarring movement. The assessment test in particular is pretty impressive, thorough, long (reserve about 30 minutes for this part), and technical. But it assumes any body imbalances or restrictive movements are related to unconditioned body parts that can be corrected over time. I don't think so. The transitions from one movement to the next, especially from floor to standing and back, are too fast for slower moving individuals. You'll fall behind if you're too slow to get back up, and pull your mat out and get back down. So far I much prefer to grab the dumbells and use Your Shape 2012 after I've got 30 minutes in the aerobic zone done and out of the way, walking on the treadmill with incline. I also still use the original Your Shape because can keep going through some cyclical toning towards the end of my routine, until I get to my calorie goal, if that is what I feel like doing that day. The original trainer that I still like is EA Sports Active 2. The PS3 one had way less tracking glitches but more stuff to put on (and that stuff can break, for a no longer supported game). The Kinect one has a few significant bugs that will never be fixed, but I still like it for a solid and well-rounded guided fitness routine that involves weights. But still, I prefer to get the first 30 minutes of aerobic zone out of the way on the treadmill before I use any of these trainer games. I will continue to try the Nike Trainer program and will certainly update my review if my opinion changes, since it is a strong one. I do have a floor mat (more for sit-ups)but that's not going to cut it to soften the jumping issue. update 1/23/13 - I'm in week 2 of Get Strong. It barely gives you 2 days a week of "weight training", and only ONE of the exercises involves weights (romanian deadlifts). Yesterday was supposed to be a weights day but it told me to do cardio (which would be a bug). I actually skipped out of the game this morning when it was Cardio again. Why? because of too much jumping, especially on one ankle. If my knees and ankles could take it, I'm sure this gets results! I'm torn between recognizing the great challenging techniques and knowing they'll wreck my joints worse than they already are. Also, the change up of weights routines from week 1 to week 2? There wasn't one. Exact same group of exercises for as long as you're willing and able to repeat it. Planks get great results, but I don't want to do more than 2 or 3 sets of them, bleah! So do I recommend this? Meh, it is worthwhile to buy if you already have YourShape, and maybe a treadmill. You can use it in combo with the other things for a longer, more varied, well-balanced workout at home. Would I want it as my only workout choice every day? No. I'd get injured, and very bored of the same stuff repeating until I get to my calorie/time goal. And it wouldn't give me as much weight training as I wanted. So an average of 3 stars for the good and the bad of it. 3/3/13 - One last thing - if you quit out of the 4-week program, you finally get to choose what type of workout you want that day, how long, and what intensity (via the Quick Start Menu). Takes an extra minute or two, but worth it for me. Much better but I still leave the 3 star in place.
