Excellent books
We have been looking for books that will hold my son's interest and help to continue his journey as a developing reader. He loves comics and graphic novels - has been devouring them; will re-read one that he's finished and this book was no different. He finished reading this over a weekend and then started to re-read it. We love that he can't wait to read these as he has had difficulty reading prior to discovering this author. Asa parent I'm happy that he's happy and feels a sense of accomplishment so much so that he now reads to us.

Recommended
My older son (age 7) likes this very much. The stories are good; they have a point, and the artwork is also good, although of course I like some styles better than others, but having an anthology with different styles is a good idea. My son also got many of the european classic comics:Asterix, Tintin, Lucky Luke. I avoided the violent american ones.

Excited to read
My son read the Amulet series and this book is written by the same author so he’s excited to read it.

Spoiler-free Review
Explorer: The Mystery Boxes is a collection of seven short comic stories, each 15 to 20 pages long and in color. Every story features a mysterious box of some sort, and the collection is edited by Kazu Kibuishi, author of the Amulet series, which I love. In a few of the stories, the box is quite small. Usually, there's something inside. In a couple of the stories, the box is large, a spaceship, even. There is a lot of good in The Mystery Boxes; each story is very different, but the quality, at least for me, doesn't even come close to comparing to Amulet. Here are my ratings of the individual stories:"Under the Floorboards": Cute, and perfect for a child. ****1/4"Spring Cleaning": A little too kidsy. ***"The Keeper's Treasure": Stupid. *"The Butter Thief": Imaginative. ***3/4"The Soldier's Daughter": Deals with death, so it might not be suitable for very young readers. ***1/2"Whatzit": Very, very funny, and almost worth the collection by itself. ****3/4"The Escape Option": Done by Kibuishi himself. ****That averages out to about ***1/3, but this collection is better than the sum of its parts. For kids 8 or 9 to 12, it's ideal. As an adult, I have to rank it ***3/4

Great Anthology
I started with the Amulet series, and am now a big fan of Kibuishi's work. This book is an anthology of his stuff and that of a bunch of his colleagues, but it's very good. The diversity between the different artists is a definite plus. Visually stunning all around.

A fantastic book
This book is better than Kazu's previous anthology series, Flight. Some of the drawings are nice, some are just OK, but all the stories in this book is good. If you like Flight, then you will like this book as well.

Great Series
My son and I both wish there were more of this series. Some of the stories are a little violent, but mostly very intriguing. Good for 6 and older if the child is not too fearful.

My 8 year old love graphic novels
My 8 year old love graphic novels. This was a great one in her age range. She read it in one day. Great book for that kid who is a good reader but doesn't love to read, as much as Mom would want. The graphic novels get her interest.
