I have four children and they all seem to enjoy working through this series. I am seeing a benefit in their reading, spelling and writing skills. My kids regularly laugh and share with each other the funny little mistakes and stories from this series as they complete assignments. To be honest, any phonics program that my kids will do happily each day for YEARS without crying, complaining or whining is a major winner. I am finding that if I start the kids in book 1 in first grade, and take our time, that we come to this book near the middle of second grade. This is just about when my kids are taking-off in their reading skills and reading chapter books. Review: Explode the Toad!!!! A work book that's so good for learning and not so bad... - My son is 7 and has been using explode the code since he was 5 1/2. He isn't a fan of workbooks but he can stomach this one. His reading and writing has improved greatly. I like how its broken down into lessons. We try to get through one lesson a day and that is usually not a problem. He can do it mostly on his own now that he has done the previous books starting with the A, B, C books. I explain at the beginning of each lesson and then he can get through the whole lesson independently then we review it together. Sometimes we even share some laughs at the pictures and questions in the book so it makes the lessons fun and easier to get through.

decoding and reading instruction
We have gone through all the Explode the Code books and find they all have great value in the process of learning to decode/phonics and reading skills. This book introduces and works through the various ways to divide words. The book uses a progression of lessons to go through the basics of how to divide words. It is an excellent book and a good way to help students decode longer and more complex words. The first lesson is dividing compound words, second lesson reviews common endings (ful, ing, est, ed, ness and the lessons go on from there. The book introduces the concept of open and closed syllables which is also a great help in decoding. The lessons comprise 8 pages of various activities to solidify the concept. This book is a good choice and a great value.

great
This book is a great book for helping children learn to spell and read. The only problem I have is that the illustrations are poorly drawn. Sometimes my daughter and I both have a hard time figuring out what they are supposed to be! Otherwise, I would have given it five stars.

Love
I love all the explode the code books. My kids think it can get repetitive as all the lessons are the same. It only takes them a few minute a day for them to finish a lesson per week. Don't tell them but I like that its repetitive, I had them the sheets and they know what to do. The lessons are effect and progress smoothly from book to book.

For kids ready to move up in thier beginning reading
I have used these books in a classroom setting and with my own homeschooled children. Four is a big jump in reading skill from three. You have to be pretty strong at sounding out words without much hesitation. That being said, Explode the Cod 3 1/2 is a great step for ones who could benefit from more practice before going to reading word with two syllables.

Should have been marked to not good
The review said it was good but used. It had 10+ pages written on and at least 9 pages ripped out. The book only has 40 pages so definitely was a bummer.

I used this series for my child who would be in first grade this year (end of 1st) he turned 7 in Jan. he enjoys the series and we are completing about 3.5 books a calendar year. He has been great reader since he was 5 and this helps with spellling/writitng. Homeschool success.

Sad to see this apparently is now out of print, the systematic breakdown of types of syllables for reading is hard to beat. I have yet to find a British equivalent that explains the concept as clearly. The other books in the series are good too. The exemplar sentences are quite fun but watch out for some expressions and spellings that are more American than British!
