This book is pretty scholarly, almost too much so for a casual reader. However, it is so fascinating & thorough that it's easy to forgive the occasional swamp. Best of all, in the several instances when the record about the diamond's history is deeply controversial / heavily speculative, he gives the arguments on all sides, usually explaining into what camp he falls & why. If you are interested in the Hope Diamond, this is a M U S T read!!

This is a very well-researched book about the Hope Diamond-from its origins to its'present day status. The author weaves a very long and interesting history.

Being a former jeweler and someone who loves and collects gemstones this had too much detail for even me! There was so much detail my eyes would gloss over after reading for 20 or 30 minutes.I would imagine the average person would be even more overwhelmed than I was! You might find it strange but I would have rated this HIGHER with fewer details.But since I have to rate it for what it is and not what I would preferred, I would rate this a 6.5 to 7.0 out of 10.
