Scientists at iihr, bangalore have developed a hybrid papaya variety called "surya #2". It provides medium sized fruits weighing on an average 800-1200 g each and the fruits are very sweet with very good shelf life. The plant is very dwarf with fruits sometimes touching the ground this variety is said to address the long felt need of papaya growers to have medium sized fruits with high yields. The fruits may be harvested 7-9 months from transplanting. On an average plant provides 48-58 kg fruits.
