Highly recommend
This book was so well written, it was really an enjoyable read. Even though some of the characters are high school age, their manner of speaking is mature which aids in making this a good read for an adult. I loved the characters, especially Angie. She is such a spitfire. But besides her, you can tell that the author put a lot...and I mean a lot...of thought and care into the creation of each of her characters. Every character had development and growth throughout the book, taking them beyond the typically one dimensional feel. While the dynamic was a bit predictable between a few of the characters, it was still worth it to watch them develop. I loved how all of these different events that occurred in Hope's life tied together, in way that felt natural and not at all forced. The connections felt real and believable. The ending was so good, I of course jumped immediately to the next book in the series. This is the first book I've ever read by this author, and I feel so fortunate that I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review. It lead me to discover a great author!

Warning: Cliff hanger
Somehow I missed the fact that this was a cliffhanger when I was reading the reviews. Unless you love cliff hangers, don't bother. Too many inconsistencies, holes, non sequiturs, unrealistic dialog, unrealistic "thoughts," too much story shoved into one fairly short book. With a lot of heavy cutting, there could be a moderately interesting story here, but in its current state, it's really not worth trying to wade thru. And I definitely have absolutely no interesting in buying the next one. In fact, right now I need to go read something that will be more satisfying. I need to get the taste of this one out of my mind.

Disappointed with this book for it's inaccuracies and inconsistencies regarding Japanese mythology and culture. This series had so much potential yet it's weighed down by the small details that showcases lack of research and appropriation for novelty. I wanted to root for Hope but she came off as indecisive and weak. The "love triangle" which ended up being a hexagon by the end was eye-rolling. Why would Tie provoke Hope by kissing another girl merely to prove her healing powers? When he's waited 1000 years for her to be reborn and considering what he'd done for Hope. He had to have known on some level, and it doesn't make sense for that to occur in order to prove a point when it becomes an inconsistency in character development. Other inaccuracies were the redundancy in explaining sprinkled Japanese terms and re-explaining what it is in English when it takes place in their dialogue back in time - when they would be speaking in Japanese. Context clues are a wonderful thing when written well. Nor is the currency the same yen 1000 years ago in Japan. It's also an annoying bodice ripper moment where Tie aka Musubi "rips off" Hope's kimono and as royalty wearing a kimono that's ridiculous because of the process in itself of putting on a kimono correctly. One does not just conveniently rip it off. It's annoying because the intimacy could still have built if he took off her kimono for practical reasons, especially if they fought it out during training. These small details may be simply overlooked and accepted in order to see where the actual storyline goes, but it underwhelms the potential to be a real keeper by falling short. Hopefully future writings have improved and been more well researched than this series.

Love triangles and mysterious hot guys
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book. The Healer was quite an interesting read. Its about a girl named Hope who has the ability to heal people by telling people's life force how to heal itself. I know, sounds complicated. But I thought it was really well thought out and I found to be very interesting in the story. CJ did a great job making this visual to the reader. Hope also has a best friend with some weird niches of her own(one that I found to be obvious from the beginning). Hopes life gets turned upside-down with the entrance of two new boys Victor and Tie who seem to know a lot about her and seems to have a weird connection. This book was filled with some great action. Not gonna spill it all but there are swords involved. Hellz yea. There is a complicated romance brewing between Hope, Victor, and Tie but I really enjoyed it. Ok I really love Tie, I'm totally on his team.Overall I thought the story was ok. It kept me reading, but not dying to know what would happen next. I do think this book has some great things going for it and I do want to read the next book. There is a secret twist to the story that I loved. The romance is just right and not overbearing, the relationship between Hope and her best friend was funny and sweet, Hope's dad is a refreshing sight in a YA novel, and some great action to boot.If you like A Mortal Song by Megan Crewe and Connected by Kat Stiles then I definitely recommend this book.

Team Tie.
Very interesting! I loved the Asian history that was included throughout the book, and how the more you read the more questions need answering and the suspense you get while trying too figure things out. I mean it's definitely a young teenager book in my opinion so it could of been a bit more darker if it was aiming at a older audience but there is nothing wrong with a bit of innocence thrown in you know? I am definitely on team Tie for hope, he has the brooding dark vibe with a touch of vulnerability a lady cannot resist, i will be looking forward too knowing his story better and its obvious angie and Victor are better suited. I liked angie because she had the shallowness of a typical teenager that balances Hope's maturity, but also is very loyal and protective over her. Anyways you can tell the story has only just begun after reading this book, and I want Hope's past life experience too be as like-able as her modern one. Very much enjoyed this :)

Really enjoyed this one.
A strange mix of East meets West and ancient meets present. Totally engrossing and with the added mix of evil and death. Just read the whole series of these books to find out what happens next and at the end.

predictable
I didn't realise when I bought this book that it was aimed at teenagers. I read it to the end but I found it rather predictable and far fetched, I do like fantasy books but like them to be a bit more believable

Prophesy and gods sounds similar
I read a book not so long ago on the same lines, except it was Norse gods not Japanese. Very similar story lines, very similar characters so i am expecting the same outcome.
