The flash drive is actually conditionally read-only, depending upon the position of the read-only switch. In the read-only position, the drive cane be read from but not written to -- this is useful if you want to use it to store a clean copy of an operating system installation disk (especially since a fair number of modern computers do not have a CD/DVD/BluRay drive, let alone floppy drive, that would have served the same purpose in past years) -- you never know when you might need this if your computer develops a persistent crash or virus/worm/Trojan horse infection. In the other position, the drive can be written to -- this is how you put the clean copy of the operating system installation disk (or whatever) on there in the first place (from a known good system).
