The G. K. Chesterton Collection [50 Books]

G.K.Chesterson - A Collection that will Add Stimulating Thinking to Your Day and Life...
This is a monster collection of Chesterton's writings. Quite frankly if I waited until I had read every piece, I'd not be able to submit this review for another two years. Chesterton is a masterful writer and a deep thinker who can articulate his thoughts with clarity. I cannot recommend Chesterton highly enough. It is a real pleasure to watch him unravel a complex topic and render it into something understandable and usable in the Christian life. I'm a fan of Chesterton so I'm prejudiced. This is a goldmine of insightful thinking that will stimulate you. For me, reading people like Chesterton is like getting my brain "detailed." Living life is like adding mileage to your car. Eventually, it needs a good cleaning to shine. Chesterton will do that to you.

Witty, Wise and Well-formatted
This is a great collection of GKC's essays, Father Brown stories and novels. I'd start with the novels first: The Man Who Was Thursday, The Ball and the Cross, The Napoleon of Notting Hill. Then try Orthodoxy. The Everlasting Man, one of the best critiques of popular anthropology, is NOT here. But for two bucks ...Chesterton is opinionated, but he comes from an era when having an opinion was not a complete social faux pax. He was life-long friends with those with whom he vehemently disagreed, including H. G. Wells and Shaw (the latter held a popular series of good-natured yet serious debates with Chesterton. Once you get used to hearing an actual opinion and evaluating it for yourself, you'll enjoy GKC's humor and keen observations on everything from lying in bed to capitalism.

Insightful and fun. It is very refreshing to go back in ...
Insightful and fun. It is very refreshing to go back in time and think along with a popular thought leader of an earlier era.The Father Brown stories are the best part. There are more of them than I thought, but there is not an infinite number of them. Some are a little more gruesome than I remember from reading them in the 1960's. They aren't quite the same as Sherlock Holmes, but very much in the same genre (often with the same villain reappearing) and more sophisticated than Erle Stanley Gardner and Ellery Queen. They provided multiple hours of delightful reading and there was often a surprise ending that satisfied.I am not a Roman Catholic and never will be, but Chesterton never-the-less dishes out real food for thought and some wonderful quotes for my public speaking. More importantly, he provides conservative principles and ideas upon which one can build a career and a strong family.I strongly recommend turning off your TV and remembering how to think (remember what that was like, back in the day?) by opening these volumes and consuming them all. Your life will be enriched, you will mature, and you will begin to exude wisdom yourself, which your family and associates rightfully expect of you. This is the kind of stuff you are REALLY looking for when you peruse the library or bookstore shelves for hours on end. Have a happy day!

Why are we not all reading something by Chesterton?
I've only started reading some of Chesteron's essays, but the book was worth it for the essays alone. I don't understand everything he writes -- not because he's trying to be academic, more that he has thought things I've never thought before. He can take something as simple as the name Smith and turn it into poetical prose. He is just very comforting, and it feels as though he is still with us, and that is comforting, too.

Quite the Collection
50 Books! So much to read and I am chewing through them in no particular order. Chesterton is clearly not everyone's cup of tea, but I love the style, the turn of the phrase, the insights, the humor, the prodigious intellect. This was a great purchase and for the price, it feels like a steal. Some of his insights are prophetic. Just the book on his visit to America is worth the price of the collection.

Good collection.
Great collection. The only thing somewhat annoying is the fact that it is one large volume of his works, so it takes a bit to get to a particular book (the T of C is good, though) and you don't get indication in the bottom margin of the reader of what particular book you're in. Other than that, no complaints.

Easily worth the price of admission
The Ball and the Cross, written in 1906 by GK Chesterton, in this kindle along with 49 more of his books for $1.99, maybe one of my most enjoyable reads. Hilarious, imaginative, a page turner, timeless, timely, a thought provoking allegory. If you haven't already read it, read it. If you have, read it again. If you have the time, sit down with a pitcher of muddled limeys and read. If you haven't got time, pull an allnighter; the next day will still feel better than a full night's sleep. Let yourself fall into what maybe the best dream you've never had.Anyway.... I liked it.

Looking into the mind of a genius!!!
I became familiar with G K Chesterson by reading a few of his quotes. Initially I was taken with his ability to capture larger truths in minimalist fashion, and do it with great eloquence and power. I started with "A Short History of England" and it is like reading a novel that is nearly impossible to put down; except that it is actually a history book. Chesterson has the ability to frame an otherwise rarely thought of argument or point of view quickly, and color it with truths that warm the heart knowing that you are reading the words of a man devoted to telling a story with truth as his primary avenue of approach.Bottom line... $1.99 for a single writing of Chesterson is a fantastic deal. To get 34 of his best is a ridiculously valuable treasure sold at less than the cost of gas to drive to your local book store (providing you could even find it without having to special order it).
